Model distillation - Training data is not loaded

I have 20 saved chat completions in my dashboard. When I click the ‘Distill’ button, I see ‘Training data (Processing… 0%)’ for 1-2 seconds, but after that, the training data section remains empty. Has anyone experienced this? Am I missing a step in generating the training data? I assumed that applying my filters would select the data needed for fine-tuning, and then clicking ‘Distill’ would prepare it.

Use external platform whith new prompts

Welcome to the Forum @robert.kloepsch!

The workflow for the creation of a fine-tuning job with distillations is as follows:

  1. You apply one or multiple of the available filters to your stored completions.
  2. In the pane with your stored completions you should then see the filtered completions.
  3. You then click on the distill button.
  4. A pop-up opens prompting you to create a new fine-tuned model - as per usual you have to select the base model and the other parameters for the fine-tuning job.
  5. You click on create and then your fine-tuning job starts immediately.

There is no visible step for the training data creation so to say. The data is directly pulled from your stored completions. As a result you will also not directly see a file with the training data in your file storage pane. While “technically” the file shows under the fine-tuning job, it is currently not allowed to download files containing stored completions.

I hope that helps and let us know if you continue to face issues or anything else is unclear.

thanks for your response @jr.2509. After filtering my completions and click on “Distill” The training data section keeps beeing empty. But this should be filled with the completions I filtered. Because my training data section is empty I cannot click on “Create” because its missing the training data.

This shows that I have filtered for 20 completions. I then click on “Distill”.

For 1 or 2 seconds I see that the data is getting processed but it then just disappears:

Interesting - thanks for further clarifying. Have you tried logging out and in again; refreshing the browser; clearing the cache etc?

if all of this fails, then your best option is to consult the OpenAI support directly via the chat widget on the developer platform.
