Encountring the same issue excessive API requests and balance consumed in 1h !

Revoke your key and try to see where it may have been leaked.

What kind of application do you have?

Unfortunately, I have the same issue. The usage just went up like crazy. All from gpt4 API requests.

I have the api key stored in Firebase only and my app is using gpt-3-turbo not gpt4. I just found out about when I receive the email from openai telling that my soft limit has been reached which I set for $80.
I went to check the usage is all gpt4 requests. And the in the API settings page the last used status for the key ( I only have one) is still at 3 Oct and all the gpt4 api requests are happening during the last 6 days up to now.

Please see this section of the support site

https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7242626-how-can-i-report-fraud-or-suspicious-activity

All the gpt4 requests:

Every hour is like that, and is like this for the past 6 days.

I revoked the API key twice already and gpt4 api requests still go up like crazy. So after the email I went to revoke the key and an hour later, I see the requests went up again, then I revoked again and generated a new one it still happening.

You are likely:

  1. putting your API key into a compromised site or software specifically made for harvesting keys,
  2. have an account that is compromised, (reset password)
  3. need to review your organization members to ensure you are the only one there.

Thanks for helping. The original key was only placed in Firebase nowhere else.

OpenAI support is still not responding to my support chat.

@cation I am also experiencing a very similar situation like what you described in this thread. what was the solution for you then? did Openai resolve it for you?

They have not resolved the issue but they refunded the money.

bummer! at least they refunded you the money, which is at least some comfort. My worry is that this may happen again some time in the future if we don’t get to the root cause of it. Our team been thinking along the line of our api key getting compromised or leaked somehow, but I still got massive bills even though i rotated my api keys almost once every hour and it still happens. so weird! is it just you and me seeing this issue? what about other people on this forum?

@deved has OPENAI resolved your usage issue yet? running into the same issue here. I am actually experiencing the same issue. basically I got a massive bill $140 dollars now as it stands, for a lot of GPT-4 api calls and my iOS app is specifically configured to call only 3.5-turbo. no get-4 calling at all from my code. Normally my bill was just $0.07 tops, but yesterday I got $130 charged for one day and today I got $17 dollars more even though I rotated the api key on an hourly basis. so weird. any help is greatly appreciated.

Please don’t post on multiple threads.

My crystal ball is telling me you are making the API calls inside of the iOS app.

So weird, we are facing the exact same issue. Never switched on GPT4 Turbo or GPT4 and getting massive bills! We revoked all keys and triple checked for leakage, but we had best practices in place. And it still continues to bill!! The problem started on Nov 13 after the latest release of GPT4, so I suspect something is off.

Don’t put API keys in your app. They will be stolen and abused.

You need a backend server with client authentication. Clients must only communicate with you, not OpenAI.

Did you place the key inside the app? Like hard coded into the app?

Something tells me that you’ve put your API key directly inside the app code, didn’t you?
