This makes using ChatGPT for code editing more difficult as macOS users are forced to use the standard model.

OpenAI please have a look into this, the MacOS app is borderline useless for paying users with this bug.

It doesn't look like we currently support selecting your model within Projects within the macOS app. I've passed this along to the Projects team. Thank you all for your feedback!

Hello from the future of Feb 2026: this is still a problem! The MacOS client still lacks this very basic functionality that is present in the browser version!

When I look at a project chat, the UI has no indication of what model I am talking to. And when I try to use the “model picker” to select the thinking model, it just opens a brand new context window (that is not part of the current project)

“Borderline useless” indeed. I’m amazed this has been an issue for so long. But I suppose that I shouldn’t be surprised that the MacOS client has been functionally abandoned now that OpenAI is probably more focused on supporting Atlas.
