Long-term Project Continuity & Successor Chat Woeklow

Subject: Feature Request: Long-Term Project Continuity & Successor Chat Workflow

I’ve been using ChatGPT to build a long-running investment decision system with multiple specialized chats. Over time, I discovered that the biggest challenge isn’t model quality—it’s preserving mature reasoning as conversations become very large.

To solve this, I engineered my own workflow using:

  • Intelligence Manuals
  • Institutional Intelligence Harvests
  • Structured migration packages
  • Validation checklists
  • Successor-chat initialization

It works, but it’s entirely manual.

I think ChatGPT could provide a much better experience with native support for long-term projects.

My highest-priority feature requests are:

  1. Conversation Health Indicator
    • Show when a conversation is approaching practical limits.
    • Use a simple Green / Yellow / Orange / Red status.
    • Recommend when to prepare a successor chat.
  2. One-Click Successor Chat
    • Create a new conversation already initialized with approved context.
    • Preserve project continuity without copying and pasting.
  3. Project Workspaces
    • Let users organize related chats into a workspace.
    • Allow approved documents to be shared across those chats with user control.
  4. Persistent Project Assets
    • Store reusable documents such as manuals, workflows, and reference files once.
    • Allow all authorized chats within the workspace to access them.
  5. Migration Validation
    • Provide an optional checklist confirming that important project knowledge transferred successfully before retiring the previous conversation.

These features would benefit users working on long-term projects in investing, software engineering, research, legal work, writing, education, and many other domains.

The model quality is already excellent. Improving long-term continuity would significantly enhance the experience for advanced users and reduce one of the biggest practical limitations of extended ChatGPT use.

Thank you for considering this suggestion.

Hey @Vivek_Sharma2, welcome to the community!

This is a thoughtful proposal for managing long-running work where the important challenge is carrying mature project context forward, rather than simply continuing one increasingly large conversation.

Projects already cover part of this by keeping related chats, files, and instructions together, and a new chat within the same project can reference that project context. Check out this article for more info: Projects in ChatGPT

However, the conversation health indicator, one-click approved handoff, and migration validation process you described would provide a much more structured successor-chat workflow than what is currently available.

I can’t promise or share a timeline for changes like this, but I’ll pass the detailed workflow and feature suggestions along internally.
