I’ve spent four days trying to generate and receive a full-length chapter (~4,000 words) using ChatGPT (GPT-4 on the iOS app), and the system simply cannot deliver. What should be a basic writing task turns into an endless loop of broken messages, cut-off text, and lost progress.
Here are the core problems:
• Message Length Limits
ChatGPT can only send about 1,300–1,600 words per message. Anything longer is silently cut off mid-sentence, with no warning to the user.
• No Automatic Continuation
There is no way for GPT-4 to automatically continue long content across multiple messages. The assistant must wait for user input between each part, breaking the flow and causing delays.
• Session Resets Lose Everything
If the user pauses, the app times out, or a formatting tool is used and crashes, the session resets. Long content that was “in progress” is gone—forcing a restart.
• No Notification of Truncation
When content is cut off, the app gives no indication. The user assumes they received the full message when they haven’t.
• Export Tools Don’t Work on iOS
On iPad, exporting to PDF often results in placeholder text, partial content, or broken files. Copying long responses into Notes or Mail causes formatting corruption, with odd symbols or broken characters.
This makes long-form writing nearly impossible.
Writers, educators, and anyone creating content beyond a few paragraphs are stuck.
Feature Fixes Requested:
• Warn users when a response is too long to fit in one message
• Enable automatic multi-message continuation for long-form content
• Preserve formatting tool state across brief inactivity
• Fix or improve export options (especially PDF on iOS)
This is a major roadblock for anyone trying to use GPT-4 for real work.
