My phone had a hardware problem and had to be repaired. During the repair, all data on the phone was wiped, including Microsoft Authenticator. After reinstalling it, my OpenAI/ChatGPT authenticator entry was gone, so I can no longer generate the 6-digit MFA code.I am still signed in to ChatGPT on my Windows PC and I still have full access to my registered email address. However, I’m completely stuck:
“Try another method” only gives me Authenticator App and Push notification.
I cannot use the Authenticator because the data was lost.
I cannot use Push because the ChatGPT mobile app is signed out.
Signing back into the mobile app also requires the Authenticator code.
Adding WhatsApp / SMS / Passkey all require the existing Authenticator code or push approval.
Disabling or changing MFA requires the same unavailable verification methods.
So I still have an authenticated desktop session, but every option that could help me recover or replace MFA requires the MFA method I already lost.My OpenAI Support case is #15121800.Timeline:
September 16: Support (Allen) replied and asked me to sign in and start a new support chat from the Help Center.
September 18: I followed the instructions exactly while signed in on my desktop. The new request was automatically closed as a duplicate and redirected me back to Case #15121800.
I replied in the existing case explaining the situation, but I have still not received any further response.
For now, I’m keeping my current desktop session signed in and I will not log out.If anyone has recovered from this exact situation (especially with Microsoft Authenticator data wipe), I’d really appreciate hearing how it was resolved.
— could someone please take a look at Case #15121800 and help escalate it for MFA reset? Thank you.
