ChatGPT Live works well for quick conversation. It should also support requests that take several minutes of web research, data analysis, Python execution, tool use, or computer use without becoming silent and opaque.
When a task runs long, Live could acknowledge it normally, then switch to a quiet working state. A subtle sound based on the search and thinking cues from the earlier Voice experience could continue in the background. At meaningful stage changes, a neutral system voice could give brief operational updates:

- “Running an analysis.”
- “Using computer controls.”
- “Verifying the result.”
The system voice should be clearly distinct from Live’s conversational voice, so the user hears it as status information rather than a new turn in the conversation.
The session should remain interactive while work continues. The user could say:

- “Check one more possibility.”
- “Skip that step.”
- “Pause.”
- “Tell me what you have so far.”
Live would update the running task without requiring the user to start over.
A compact record of searches, tool calls, and major processing stages could remain in the conversation for later review. When the task finishes, the working sound stops and Live returns to its normal voice with the result.
This would let Live support both quick conversation and serious, hands-free work. The user could wait, redirect the task, and understand its progress without watching the screen.
