Feature Request: Persistent Cross-Mode Conversation Threads
I use ChatGPT extensively for long, topic-specific discussions rather than one-off questions. Many of these conversations happen in Voice Mode because it is much more natural than typing.
The current experience breaks continuity. A voice conversation may not always remain available in history, and even if I save or share it, I cannot continue it as the same live thread. A shared conversation is essentially a snapshot rather than an ongoing conversation.
Even when I copy the entire conversation into a new chat, switching back to Voice Mode often feels like starting a fresh conversation instead of continuing the existing discussion. This defeats the purpose of having long-term conversations.
What I would like is a seamless, persistent conversation experience where text and voice are simply two ways of interacting with the same thread.
My ideal experience would include:
One continuous conversation that I can switch between typing and speaking without losing context.
The ability to reopen any previous conversation, including Voice Mode conversations, and continue exactly where I left off.
The ability to convert a shared conversation into a live conversation that I can continue instead of treating it as a read-only snapshot.
Topic-based workspaces or threads (for example: Tax Planning, Travel Planning, Career, Personal Projects, Book Discussions, etc.) that preserve all context, files, reasoning, and decisions over time.
Voice Mode should understand the full context of the thread just as well as text mode, instead of behaving like a new conversation.
I believe this is an important direction for AI assistants. In the future, people will naturally switch between voice and text depending on where they are—walking, driving, working, or relaxing. Users should not have to think about whether they are in Voice Mode or Text Mode. It should feel like one continuous conversation.
I would happily pay for this capability because it would transform ChatGPT from a collection of separate chats into a true long-term AI collaborator that can maintain context across projects, devices, and interaction modes.

The idea of text and Voice feeling like two ways of continuing the same conversation makes a lot of sense.
A discussion might begin while someone is typing at their desk, continue through Voice while they are travelling, and return to text later. Having to rebuild the context or feel like the conversation has restarted interrupts that flow.
Your point about shared conversations is useful too. Being able to turn a shared snapshot into a conversation that can actually continue would make it much more practical for ongoing work.
Bringing that continuity together with Projects, files, previous decisions, and conversation history could make ChatGPT feel more like a long term collaborator instead of a collection of separate sessions.
I cannot promise a timeline for changes like this, but I will pass your feedback along internally.
