Insane usage burn rate swing on Pro 20x, potential bug

I’m on ChatGPT Pro 20x, and my weekly Codex allowance suddenly started draining much faster despite a substantial drop in recorded token usage. I have a Support case open, but I’d like to understand whether anyone else has seen this pattern or can explain the accounting behind it.

I used Codex to compare OpenCodex request logs from my Mac and Linux machine with timestamped allowance readings from CodexBar. The attached chart shows cumulative token usage, split by model, above the weekly allowance consumed. It covers September 8–9, 2026, and all times are Berlin time, CEST.

I also have advanced account security enabled and reviewed the devices signed into my account. I recognized all four: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Linux.

On September 8, between 04:56 and 22:59, the logs recorded 2.180 billion tokens, while the weekly allowance moved by 6 percentage points. Over the following seven hours, ending at 05:58 on September 9, they recorded 472.9 million tokens, while the allowance moved by another 65 percentage points. There was no weekly reset between those readings.

That works out to roughly 50 times more allowance consumed per recorded token in the second period. These token totals include cached input once and exclude separately reported reasoning output. I understand that models, cached input, output, reasoning and service tiers can have different weights. The chart does not establish a 50× billing multiplier, and I wouldn’t expect the two curves to match exactly. What I’m trying to reconcile is the size and timing of the change.

Caching was good tho. The share of input tokens reported as cached actually rose from 97.55% to 98.63% between those periods. The Linux checks also found no sustained cache failure or recorded proxy retry amplification in the six-hour sample examined.

For context, OpenCodex is the local proxy I use to route models through Codex, including models from other providers. This analysis includes only OpenAI-routed requests, and the allowance readings agree with the percentage shown in the ChatGPT app. Those checks give me more confidence in the comparison, although they don’t rule out every client, logging or accounting issue.

One relevant complication is Fast mode. I initially thought it was off overnight, but the logs show priority routing on about 40% of requests during that period, compared with about 10% earlier. Those records describe requested routing; they do not establish which tier was actually billed. I’d like Support to reconcile that alongside the model mix and my Pro 20x entitlement.

I wasn’t using ChatGPT Work during this period. What remains unexplained is the sharp change in allowance consumption relative to the recorded workload. Was the earlier usage unusually discounted or undercounted, was consumption posted with a delay, or was the later usage charged differently?

It’s getting worse I lost 22% of my weekly usage on Pro 20x on 1x Astra high and 8x Luna Max subagents for reviewing PRs, in 1h 30m :sob:

I’m all out of usage now but this is insane

My codex burned 85% of x20 plan usage in 2 and half hour. It was doing small code audit. :frowning:

I literally just had Luna work for 8minutes on 5x Pro and it consumed my remaining 27%. I gave all logs to support chat and been waiting on a transfer for 20 minutes. Is there a way to get human support?

Well… maybe I’m not crazy

they corrected my usage atleast, back at 81%, thank you :smiley:

Same issue for me, im at 5% but my date got changed as well

I am also a 20x pro subscriber and I got nuked with a total of 100% usage, 60% one time and then I used a reset and hit 40% again; I really hope I will get it back.

I agree. I used to do good ammount of development just two days before, on Astra or Sol, xHigh. Yesterday, my usage drained in short time using Astra light, 20% of 20x Pro in short time. It feels like a different system just one day later. Something really had to happens.

I run a 20x ChatGPT subscription and a 20x Claude subscription, and I managed to burn through 90% of the ChatGPT usage in 2 days doing pretty basic tasks, nothing heavy. Similar tasks in the Claude 20x only used about 20% of my weekly usage. Something is definitely off.

Having the same issue, I’ve used 2 of my resets in 2 days to try and keep up.

This is one of the more useful usage reports because you separated recorded workload from allowance movement instead of assuming the percentage bar is a token counter.

I have one independent accounting observation that makes your “delayed posting vs changed weighting vs bug” question worth taking seriously.

On a separate consumer account I captured the native usage objects behind the UI. The primary allowance object exposes an 18,000-second window (5 hours) and a 604,800-second window (7 days) as percentage-used state. A separate endpoint named daily-token-usage-breakdown did not expose absolute token totals for that account; it returned units: "percent" and model/surface attribution. So the visible allowance bar is definitely not a simple cumulative token meter.

More importantly, in one observed sequence the visible meter was about 57% five-hour remaining / 93% weekly remaining after the relevant Work activity. Later, without a new model turn during the measurement interval, the native allowance state had reached 45% / 91%. The daily attribution for that date associated the represented activity with work_web.

I am not claiming this proves idle consumption or double charging. A perfectly plausible explanation is delayed reconciliation from the earlier task. But from the customer’s side, delayed reconciliation and an erroneous later deduction are indistinguishable because there is no normal per-turn ledger showing when each deduction was incurred and when it was posted.

That is why I think the most useful thing OpenAI could expose here is a per-task usage receipt containing at least:

  • model + reasoning effort / service tier;
  • cached vs uncached input, output and reasoning usage (or the normalized compute equivalent actually used for allowance accounting);
  • five-hour and weekly deduction attributable to that task;
  • timestamp the usage was incurred;
  • timestamp it was posted/reconciled to the meter;
  • any later adjustment/refund.

That would let reports like yours distinguish “later usage was legitimately more expensive” from “the meter caught up late” from “the accounting was wrong.” Right now all three can produce the same scary cliff in the UI.

Your caution around Fast/priority routing is also important. I would keep that variable explicit rather than calling the observed ~50× ratio a billing multiplier unless OpenAI can reconcile the actual service tier and accounting events server-side.

You can track this with OpenCoex. I also checked for fast routing, this is recorded per-request.

Still having this issue btw, even after the latest “fixes” tibo talked about. My usage is way worse thn a week or two ago, even Sol and especially Luna are consuming usage like crazy.

You know what’s crazy? When Sol was released, around early-mid july I think - I was able to run Sol 5.6 (max) for over 9 hours straight on a PLUS plan. If I tried the same thing on Pro now, there is no chance. I am also not sure if you noticed the same thing, but first day or two of astra release the usage was actually very good for me, it drained slowly. Was able to get work done. Now it’s way worse unfortunately.

On a plus plan… yet we’re being told nothing’s wrong with usage and that it’s just a few thousand people experiencing issues… Come on.

Same here. Sol 5.6 Low. Simple feature request. Few modifications. 10min working time.

Hits my 5h limit.

(Codex Desktop + Pro plan)

And this wasn’t anything close to “build an operating system”.

It was just three rounds of refactoring on a relatively small TypeScript project.

So the datapoint is roughly:

~32 min / 3 commits / ~900 lines of churn / 75% of the 5h limit consumed.

There is a useful official Support update from another usage thread that helps define the next diagnostic package, although it still does not explain the accounting.

In 1394437/4, @OpenAI_Support says Codex usage can vary depending on the model, context, task and tools, and asks affected users to provide the approximate upgrade time, model, relevant task/session IDs and usage screenshots:

That is not a reconciliation of the sharp workload-vs-allowance change reported here. In particular, it does not tell us the normalized accounting unit, when usage is posted, or whether a later adjustment occurred.

The same closed thread also contains one user saying their usage was corrected back to 81%. That shows adjustments can occur, but it does not establish why the original deduction happened.

The cleanest next specimen would therefore be one bounded task with:

  • native 5h + weekly allowance snapshot immediately before;
  • exact model / effort / Fast or priority-routing state;
  • task/session ID and start/end timestamps;
  • corresponding request/token/workload log;
  • allowance snapshot immediately after;
  • another snapshot several minutes later to catch delayed reconciliation;
  • any later refund/adjustment.

That would let us distinguish “this task was weighted differently” from “the meter posted late” from “the accounting was corrected later.” Until then I would still avoid treating the visible percentage bar as a literal token meter or calling the observed ratio a billing multiplier.

I am experiencing a similar issue where I burnt my 20x plan in a single day. Three concurrent sessions going but two of them were pretty regular.

Hey @OpenAI_Support

I did some testing with others. I have emailed you the proofs via support@openai.com

20x Accounts:
Pro 20x (My usage): 7.74$ / 1% (774$ per week)

Pro 20x (Wife, upgraded): 13.08$ / 1% (1308$ per week) = 69% higher than my account

Pro 20x (Colleague): 16.51$ / 1% (1651$ per week) = 113.3% higher than my account

5x Accounts:
Pro 5x (Wife): 10.40$ / 1% (1040$ per week) = 34.37% higher than my 20x account

Reference Plus Account:
September 4 saw 9.2$ / 1% (921$ per week), which is more than my Pro 20x account
September 8 saw 181.72$ / 1% (18172$ per week), which is proof of the accounting bug I am referring to
September 8 22:00 - now saw 1.07$ (107$ per week), which is not 1/20th of any of the other accounts

Fast mode was accounted for.

Why is my Pro 20x account only 7x the usage of Plus?
Why is Pro 20x not 4x higher than Pro 5x, not even double?
