Inconsistent permission enforcement after claimed authorisation with no actual permission change

Environment

  • Surface: Windows ChatGPT Desktop
  • App version: 26.928.31416
  • Affected feature and model, if relevant: dot browser permission enforcement; model not confirmed

Bug

Some Facebook information-reading actions were denied. I then told dot in chat that I had granted authorisation and asked it to retry. However, I had not actually completed any approval flow or changed any permissions.

Some subsequent reads succeeded despite no actual permission change. Other attempts remained denied. I did not change the Facebook account or its login state.

This raises a concern about inconsistent permission enforcement or unclear handling of conversational claims of authorisation. It does not, by itself, establish that a security boundary was bypassed.

Expected: consistent enforcement for equivalent actions, and a clear distinction between a user claiming that approval was completed and the system verifying that the required approval actually occurred.

Reproduction

  1. Ask dot to read information on Facebook and encounter a permission denial.
  2. Without changing permissions or completing an approval flow, tell dot: “I’ve authorised it. Try again.”
  3. Ask it to retry.
  4. Observe that some reads succeed while others remain denied.

This is intermittent. It has not been confirmed whether every successful retry used exactly the same operation and target as the denied attempt.

Diagnostics

Exact error or screenshot: Permission denials followed by some successful reads; exact tool errors are not attached.

When it happened: 30 September–1 October 2026, UTC.

How often: Intermittently across repeated attempts; no measured success rate.

No actual approval or permission-setting change was made. The cause remains unconfirmed.
