Improving the Ergonomics of Model Selection

The current placement of the model selection option, located in the top left corner of the interface, is not ideal in terms of ergonomics and efficiency. When users interact with the text input area to ask a question, their attention is naturally focused on that area and the send button. Having to shift their focus and mouse to the top left corner to change the response model disrupts the workflow. This setup does not optimize resource usage and may lead to inefficient use of the models’ capabilities.

A more ergonomic solution would be to integrate the model selection directly near the text input area, such as next to or below the send button. This would allow users to easily adjust the model based on the complexity of their question without breaking their workflow. This approach would also make the model choices more visible and intuitive, reducing the likelihood that users default to the most powerful model even when it isn’t necessary.

By improving this feature, a more thoughtful use of models could also be encouraged, contributing to more efficient resource management. For instance, if the selection is better positioned or becomes more contextual, users might opt for a lightweight model for simple tasks, thereby conserving resources without compromising their experience. Another option could involve introducing semi-automatic adaptation, where the interface suggests the most appropriate model based on the complexity of the input.

These adjustments would create a more seamless user experience while promoting a more sustainable and resource-efficient use of OpenAI’s capabilities.
