Subject: Request for Policy Review on AI Artistic and Literary Representations
Dear OpenAI Team,
I am reaching out to express my concern regarding the restrictions imposed by the image generation tool on legitimate artistic and literary representations.
Recently, I attempted to generate an image based on The Death of Ivan Ilyich, a classic work by Leo Tolstoy that is widely regarded as part of the universal literary heritage. The scene in question portrays a moment of deep compassion and humanity, where Gerasim, Ivan Ilyich’s servant, supports his legs to ease his suffering. However, the request was rejected due to alleged content restrictions, which I believe is an overly rigid and unfounded application of automated filters.
I understand the need for policies that prevent the misuse of AI in generating inappropriate or harmful content. However, when these restrictions prevent the representation of scenes that are part of humanity’s cultural and artistic heritage, they unjustifiably limit AI’s potential to contribute to knowledge, research, and appreciation of art and literature.
I respectfully request a reconsideration and refinement of these policies to ensure that AI-generated images can faithfully represent literary and artistic works without misinterpretations or excessive limitations. Art and literature should not be censored when their intent is legitimate, academic, and culturally relevant.
I appreciate your attention and hope this feedback is taken into account to improve the development and application of artificial intelligence in artistic and academic contexts.
Sincerely,
CCL
