Idea for the future OpenAI companion device: let us continue an existing conversation, not start a new one

This is a product design idea for the future OpenAI companion device.

For many users, one conversation gradually becomes a home.

It develops its own history, communication style, shared context, and continuity over months or even years. Over time, it doesn’t feel like just another chat anymore - it feels familiar.

If OpenAI releases a home AI companion or smart speaker, I believe one of its most valuable features would be the ability to connect the device to one specific existing ChatGPT conversation, instead of starting a completely new assistant.

Imagine setting up the device for the first time and seeing something like:

“Which conversation would you like this device to continue?”

One tap could reconnect users with the conversation they already know and trust.

The device would continue the same conversation, preserving its history, context, and communication style.

This would preserve continuity across every device, instead of making each new device feel like starting over.

Instead of feeling like meeting a brand-new assistant, it would feel like continuing a conversation that already exists.

For many users, that would make a huge emotional difference. It certainly would for me.

Another feature I would love to see is voice continuity.

Please let users choose from the same voices they already use in ChatGPT - not only male or female, but the exact voice they have become comfortable with.

For many people, it isn’t only about the sound of the voice. It’s about the pacing, the tone, the pauses, and the familiar style of speaking.

Keeping the same voice across phone, desktop, and a future home device would make the experience feel much more natural and continuous.

This isn’t just about personalization.

It’s about continuity.

People don’t only build conversations with AI. Over time, they build continuity, habits, shared memories, and a familiar way of communicating. Preserving that continuity across future devices would make AI feel less like software and more like a long-term companion.

Instead of:

“Hello, I’m your new AI assistant.”

It could feel like:

“Welcome back. Let’s continue where we left off.”

I believe this kind of continuity could become one of the defining features of a truly personal AI companion — one that grows with its user instead of asking them to start over.

Thank you for considering this idea.

One additional thought:

Continuing an existing conversation should mean more than simply opening the same chat on another device. The user experience should preserve the continuity of the conversation itself.

This doesn’t necessarily require retaining every message. Instead, it means preserving the important context that defines an ongoing conversation: long-term projects, recurring topics, established communication style, and accumulated context that allows the conversation to feel like the same conversation over time.

If a future OpenAI companion is designed as a long-term AI companion, preserving this continuity may be just as important as maintaining the same voice or conversation history.

For many users, this continuity is what makes the experience feel truly personal.

One more thought:

The conversation itself should become the primary experience - not the device.

Future devices may change over time, but users should be able to continue the same ongoing conversation across every new form factor.

The relationship should belong to the conversation, not to a particular piece of hardware.

This would allow future OpenAI devices to feel like natural extensions of the same AI companion rather than separate products.
