I can't switch models at all in ChatGPT Classic macOS (Constant reset to 'Auto')

Hi guys I have found probably the wonkiest solution so far and this is a revelation I found as I’m transitioning to another MacBook. Big Con: You will have to delete and reinstall ChatGPT classic app almost every single time the issue happens again (i.e if you restart your OS and such). Leave it open if anything.

  • I kept the ChatGPT Mac app from my old macbook before the .284 update. Its preserved in a folder that is untouched.

  • Copy that app into applications, then run that app. Then, you’ll update (gives you the note it will now be chatgpt classic). Log in and everything. FOR ME: It was locked to GPT 5.5 Instant. Close app fully, then open app. Now it shows “GPT 5.6 Thinking”, and I’m able to actually switch models to my liking.

    When it does happen again I completely delete every ChatGPT instance (usually w appcleaner) AND permanently empty it in the trash.

OpenAI support completely gave up on me in email so this is my hacky solution.

Doesn’t this only work if you somehow have a copy of the old app :sob:

Yea I don’t know any other current solutions its just something I found out of the blue when migrating Macs. I haven’t tried with the current ChatGPT classic app cause I don’t want to bother going through the whole process that suddenly not work after

I think they killed the app? I can’t log in anymore.

what the f*, suddenly from no where, all options have gone, instead only option is “Auto”. I’m still identified as Pro by ChatGpt , however the subcription has been canceled at this time and I tried renew the subcription but it says “There was a problem updating your subscription” - very confusing

Still waiting for a fix, i like separate apps for coding and chatting. I have also sent a report via email some months ago, nothing is hapening.
