How to Change Model Within a Project (folder)

Yep still an issue on the Mac App for me too here in the UK.

No model selection possible. Please fix it.

Up! Now we can choose the model in projects on Mobile or Web App but we don’t have a choice on macOS App. It’s a big problem.

It’s hard to believe this issue has persisted for over a year.

While ChatGPT Altas works poorly (it can’t edit the sent content), it integrates well with browsers.

On the other hand, ChatGPT Desktop is also problematic (it can’t change the model in a project), but it’s smoother.

ChatGPT Web, however, is the worst (it becomes laggy if the conversation is too long), but it offers all the features.

As a paying user, I’ve invested $200 each month, but I simply can’t find a satisfactory option to use. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Bumping for visibility. As of late Jan 2026 this issue has not been resolved yet. Please add model selection for projects in MacOS Desktop app

Please resolve this issue @OpenAI_Support

Hey all - yeah, I get why this keeps getting bumped.

There was a bug tied to a missing feature flag that could hide the model selector inside Projects on the macOS app. That’s been fixed. We just tested on a Mac with the current version of the desktop app and the model picker is showing up in Projects for us.

If you’re still not seeing it, it’s probably a version thing. Try updating the ChatGPT macOS app and giving it a restart. If it’s still missing after that, can you share which ChatGPT app version you’re on (ChatGPT → About) and your macOS version too? That’ll help us compare setups.

And if you’re blocked in the meantime, switching models inside Projects does work on the website.

Let’s see what versions you’re running.

Frustrating. This is something that I have been following for a long time. We have been able to pick model in projects in the iOS app, iPad app, web app, and ChatGPT Atlas app for a long time. Unfortunate that this has not been prioritized for the macOS app. I saw your post saying that it has been fixed. I most definitely has not been fixed for me or for anyone else that I know. Are you sure it has been fixed. If it has been fixed, why is the fix so flaky that not everyone (or anyone I know) is getting it? An update with timeline would be much appreciated.

April 2026 and this is still an issue…

Just a lil bump. April 2026, still having the same problem.

ChatGPT Mac app very randomly allowed me to use the model picker in Projects this morning, and I was overjoyed and figured there’d been an update.

Nope. A couple hours later, I tried again, and we’re back to the same bug. When I change the model in Projects, it starts a whole new empty chat.

I’m sad. I usually work in the app but still have to keep it open in the web browser simultaneously, just to change models.

I’m a Plus user on ChatGPT v. 1.2026.049 with MacOS 26.3.1.

I still have the same issue as well with ChatGPT v. Version 1.2026.051 and MacOS Sequoia v. 15.6.1.

This is really annoying and makes the project option not nearly as useful as it could be. Yesterday, I noticed that when I changed the model in a new chat outside the project, it would suddenly use the same model inside the project as well. I am not sure if that was random though. Either way, I think the model should be able to be selected independently for each chat or project.

I would really appreciate if this could be fixed soon.

Ok so on macOS 26.2 (ChatGPT version 1.2026.118) I still don’t see the model selector when I switch into a project, but if you hit the ā€˜New Chat’ icon at the top of the sidebar, choose the model you want, and then mention the project (@someproject) in the chat textbox at the bottom of the new chat window you can select your project and it will respect the model you chose and the chat will end up under your project.

I confirmed it’s using the model I selected by asking it what it’s using in the chat

This just isn’t true. This option doesn’t appear anywhere and I’m using the latest available version.

ChatGPT 1.2026.118 is currently the newest version available.

This seems to work, but it’s inconvenient to use, also it can’t be changed on previous messages. Similarly if you quit and re-enter the chat started in that way you can’t change model, or you are kicked out of it.
