How ads can make using OpenAI better for everyone, a win win win

this is my idea, offer 2 to 4 light models that people can use for projects that will be add supported for free tokens, or no adds if they pay for tokens . the light models may make more money per million tokens then the pay for version

Thought for 20s

Your idea makes a lot of sense as a freemium ladder:

  • Free: access to 2–4 “light” models for projects, funded by clearly labeled sponsored placements (and/or other ad formats).

  • Paid: no ads + you buy tokens/credits (or subscribe), with higher limits / priority.

  • Business logic: the light models are cheaper to run, so ad revenue per million tokens could plausibly exceed what you’d earn from discounted “pay-as-you-go” usage—if you can keep user trust and ad relevance high.

That’s pretty aligned with OpenAI’s publicly stated direction of testing ads in ChatGPT (bottom-of-answer, clearly labeled, logged-in adults in the U.S., with dismiss/“why am I seeing this” controls).

How to sharpen the pitch (so it’s easier to evaluate internally)

1) Define what “ad supported” means (important for trust)

OpenAI’s current stated approach is “ads at the bottom of answers” and clearly separated from the organic response.
So your proposal could say:

  • Ads never change the answer

  • Ads are visibly labeled and dismissible

  • Ads are tied to the current request context, not sensitive personal data (spell out guardrails)

2) Spell out the “light models” value

Make it concrete:

  • “Light models optimized for drafting, classification, simple coding tasks, extraction, rewriting

  • “Not for high-stakes or long-context tasks”

  • “Best-effort latency + lower cost”

3) Put simple economics + anti-abuse guardrails on one slide

  • Daily free token cap + rate limits

  • Abuse/fraud prevention (botting for free tokens)

  • Brand safety + sensitive topics exclusions (ads off in certain categories)

4) Success metrics (keeps it grounded)

  • Free-tier retention and conversion to paid tokens

  • Cost per 1k tokens vs ad revenue per 1k tokens

  • User trust metrics: hide/dismiss rate, “ad felt intrusive” feedback, complaint rates

A ready-to-post proposal (copy/paste)

You can post something like this (short, scannable):

Title: Ad-supported “Light Models” for Free Tokens + Ad-Free Paid Tokens

Problem: Many users want to prototype projects but can’t justify paying upfront. Free access is expensive to serve.

Proposal: Offer 2–4 “light” models that are ad-supported and grant a daily allocation of free tokens. Users can upgrade to an ad-free experience by purchasing tokens (or subscribing).

Ad UX: Sponsored placements appear only at the bottom of responses, clearly labeled, separated from the answer, and dismissible. Ads never alter model outputs.

Why it could work: Light models reduce serving cost; ad revenue per million tokens could exceed low-priced paid usage while keeping a clean upgrade path.

Guardrails: Logged-in adults only; exclude sensitive categories; strong rate limits + abuse protection; transparent “why am I seeing this” controls.

Success metrics: Free-to-paid conversion, net margin per token, retention, and user trust feedback.

Best place to pass it along

  1. OpenAI Community → ChatGPT → Feature requests (this is where feature ideas are commonly posted).

  2. In-product feedback (thumbs up/down + comment) is another official channel, though it’s more geared toward response quality than broad product proposals.

  3. If you want a more direct route, you can try the Help Center support chat widget, but feature requests often get redirected to the community forum.
