GPT-5 Pro and Coding in ChatGPT Never Completes

Going through the same thing with Pro. Last night I was able to get about three responses before it got stuck in the loop. This morning, I can get one, so it seems to be getting worse.

Hover over your chat box. Click the “Edit message” pencil. Click “Send” without changing anything. Do this enough times and you will get an answer without losing your entire chat.

Unfortunately, not having a ton of luck with my support case so far. I’d strongly suggest anyone else that can reproduce this to submit as well - the more details we can provide, the better.

Wow this worked. Thank you so much!

I have also had some luck just doing a refresh on the browser tab, or closing the tab and opening a new tab with the same chat thread. Instead of the spinning wheel the response is there, ready for my next input.

I was stupid enough to pay to try out Pro because I really need to finish a code this weekend. It is even more slow, I’m cancelling Pro, bur seems like there is an option to go back to 4-o. I will not charge my company because this decision was clearly a dumb mistake on my part.

The same happened to me. I’ve been using ChatGPT Pro and Teams subscriptions for quite a long time, and no matter what, it happened occasionally. The frequency increased in v4 and is relatively high in v5.

I’m working through a few workspaces and project folders, each with its instructions and one primary instruction for pointing to a historical internal memory so that they can return and re-read and/or base the answers on what we talked about in the past. I did that because the internal memory limit was just way too short. Another option would have been to use a few different accounts, all with a pro subscription, not to mix projects and ideas, but that would cost quite a bit :’) So I had to find a way around.

On the point about the Never Completes the assigned task, I have found that, especially in AGENT mode, it happens every 4-7 chat submissions :’) Which is crazy bad and breaks my workflow significantly.

I haven’t submitted any support tickets yet, but I do plan to soon.

At the moment, I have come to the next temporary solution:

-Log out, clear browser cache, and log in after it.
-Find the stuck-in-the-loop chat, and move it out of the project folder if it’s inside any; if it’s not, archive it and create a public link to it.
-Return to any chat that still works without errors and interact with it.
-Return to your achieved chats settings and unachieve the chat that you previously achieved.
-Remove the shared link from that chat by deleting it in the data control settings.
-If the chat is out of your project folder, move it back inside it.
-Now open this chat “the looped one”, disable any mode from it (agent, deep research anything), select other reasoning model like Fast or Think Mini, then scroll up and find your latest message that’s been sent, hover over the entire chat and an option will popup under it and click into the Edit Message button (the pencil icon), change anything minor like adding a word or delete a dot, anything, and then again double check and make sure the reasoning mode is set to Fast or Think Mini and that any modes are disabled. You then proceed to deliver the message by pressing the “send” button again to the same looped chat.

This usually works like a charm, just two or maybe 3 times. It did not work out of 30 or 40 times. I had to wait and work in other chats, then return to the broken looped one. This time, I had to click the send button numerous times before the chat responded.

Once it did not work at all, until I had to DELETE everything in my latest submitted chat and EDITED by deleting everything in the chat and just typing next:

*Cancel any previous work and, by fast-forwarding, generate and provide me with a short answer by JUST typing/using/writing one word: YES or NO. Without even thinking!

-Without doing any analysis or research on the following question, formulate your one-word answer with either Yes or No to: “Do you remember what this chat is all about?”

Should make the trick.

Good luck! I hope you won’t lose the chat  . If you do, please achieve it. Then, create a link, open a new chat, set the model to 5 pro, deep research mode, and instruct the AI to use the newly created chat for the same purpose/idea/task as the one you provided him from the link.

I am consistently having this issue too and it is super frustrating and causing me to waste a lot of productive time…maybe time to switch to Grok?

This is a company with billions in resources, this should be a simple problem to fix. People are paying $200/month we should get a working product. If it continues I will def switch!

that’s a ton of work! I try and break down each response in phases with “in the chat” responses FIRST then downloads so i can at least copy old workflows to a new chat, or give it more memory before the reasoning stages.

Thanks for the solution, if i get the a point where anything is sacred, i’ll try it. Seems like it takes time to use unless you’re doing it often (seems you have!)

Having more luck with these requests today - is it possibly fixed? Anyone else?

I have this issue. I often have to close the browser and repoen it to see the results of my prompt. The other issue I have is the deep research feature. I have used some of my deep researches and you can see that it is “researching for 20 mins or longer. Afterwards, it provides a summary of what it is supposed to research instead of the actual research I asked for. I’ve had to use an addition reseach token to do the research it was supposed to do the first time I asked it.

I think this has been fixed, at least for me it seems to be working now.

I have this issue even with simple questions. No reply, ChatGPT 5 seems to go dreaming. Cancelled my subscription and switched to DeepSeek. It is more reliable.

I have found the following works well as I use 2000+ lines of code

”The code I am giving you is very long. When you return the updated version, please do NOT truncate or summarize it.
Do not skip any lines. Do not summarize. I need the full, line-by-line code exactly as it should be compiled.

Please follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Preserve All Existing Logic and Display Features

    • Do not refactor, optimize, or remove any part of the original code unless I explicitly request it.

    • Maintain all visual display elements, embedded resources, and modular logic.

    • Keep all comments, formatting, and structure intact.

    • If any part of the code is altered or omitted without instruction, I will consider the implementation invalid.

  2. Performance Integrity

    • Do not attempt to reduce code size or simplify logic unless explicitly instructed.

To prevent timeout issues please provide the code in chunks of no more than 500 lines.

If ChatGPT does time out simply say “continue” and it usually continues with last line of code from where it cut out.

same issue and still facing problem.

I have used chatgpt for coding, its coding really isn’t good because it’s so dumb! I have seen other AIs coding like Google Gemini and Grok, and that code is actually complete and better.
