Why i cant use GPT-5.6 models in Codex Extension in Cursor? But i can use them in Codex-CLI. Tried to update the extension and Codex-CLI but didn’t work

Found a similar method on Reddit, tho you will still need VS Code to install extension:

This was the process and hope it helps someone:

Step 1: Download VS Code

Step 2: Install the Codex extension in VS Code

Step 3: Go to `%USERPROFILE%\.vscode\extensions` and copy `openai.chatgpt-26.5707.41301-win32-x64` folder to `%USERPROFILE%\.cursor\extensions\`

Step 4: Open the `extensions.json` file in `%USERPROFILE%\.cursor\extensions\` and change the relative paths and version of Codex (`openai.chatgpt`) extension to actual (so it will be everywhere `26.5707.41301` instead i.e. `26.5623.141536`

Step 5: Restart Cursor

That’s it.

Hi, I also found an additional method:

1. In Cursor press: Ctrl+Shift+P
2. Go to: “Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON)”
3. Add these settings inside the top-level JSON object, preserve any settings already present; just add the two properties with the necessary commas:
{
“chatgpt.runCodexInWindowsSubsystemForLinux”: false,
“chatgpt.cliExecutable”: “C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Programs\OpenAI\Codex\bin\codex.exe”
}
4. Saving and restart Cursor

Thanks. The path for me was

> “chatgpt.cliExecutable”: “C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\\OpenAI\\Codex\\bin\\VERSION\\codex.exe”,
