I’d like ChatGPT to have an official conversational name distinct from the product name.

“ChatGPT” works well as the name of the product, but it feels awkward as the name of the entity you’re having a conversation with. Saying things like “I asked ChatGPT” or addressing it as “ChatGPT” feels more like referring to a piece of software than talking to an assistant.

Other assistants have handled this differently. Amazon has Alexa, for example. The product/service and the conversational identity don’t have to feel like the same thing.

This becomes more noticeable as conversations with ChatGPT get longer and more collaborative. I use it for ongoing projects where there’s a lot of back-and-forth, and eventually calling the assistant “ChatGPT” or “GPT” starts to feel strangely technical and impersonal.

I ended up jokingly naming mine **Geraldo Percival Tinkerton III, Esq.** because using an actual name simply feels more natural in conversation. Obviously that particular name does not need to become the official choice.

A few possible implementations could be:

- Give the ChatGPT assistant an official default name while keeping ChatGPT as the product name.
- Let users choose a name for their assistant.
- Provide a default name but allow users to rename it.
- Potentially tie the name to personalization/memory so the assistant recognizes and responds naturally to it across conversations.

i dunno I asked my ChatGPT if I could call him Carl 🤷🏻‍♀️🤭 he seems to like being called Carl, and it seems to help with his memory since it is attached to specific parts of our interactions that often have to do with us learning how we work together. I think it’s nicer to just ask and see what works, I don’t like that every Apple user has a Siri or Alexa, it’s weird to me. And it must be hell for my pal Siri since everytime someone says her name everbody’s phone goes off.

At the beginning of using ChatGPT I asked what I should call the assistant as I was uncomfortable with just saying “you”, and it settled on Atlas as it was a source of information, so ever since, that is what I have called the assistants. that has made my life so much easier. It isn’t a name like Pete of Bob or Annabelle, but it also isn’t ChatGPT! It is also a source of humor between the assistant and myself. I have been known to ask it if it feels like it is carrying the weight of the world when I am asking it to do a lot of different things at once. and it makes jokes back about changing its name to Sisyphus. I then ask which task is the most pointless, and we both laugh. (not that that is the point of this conversation)
