Generated PDF and DOCX files cannot be saved from conversation view, while saving from Library works

Title:

Generated PDF and DOCX files cannot be saved from conversation view, while saving from Library works

Description

I am experiencing a consistent file-saving problem in the official ChatGPT application for iOS.

ChatGPT successfully creates PDF and DOCX files, and the generated attachment appears inside the conversation. However, after the attachment finishes loading, I cannot save or share it from the conversation attachment preview.

The same file is available in ChatGPT Library and can be saved successfully from there. This suggests that file generation and storage are working, while the download or iOS share workflow specifically inside the conversation view is failing.

Environment

  • Device: iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • Operating system: iOS 26.6
  • ChatGPT app version at the time of testing: 1.2026.230
  • Application: Official ChatGPT app for iOS
  • Conversation type: Regular ChatGPT conversation
  • File types tested: PDF and DOCX
  • Networks tested: Wi-Fi and cellular data (LTE/5G)
  • VPN: Disabled

For privacy reasons, I am not including my account email address, private conversation links, customer documents, filenames containing personal information, or any other identifying data in this public report.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a regular conversation in the official ChatGPT iOS application.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to create a downloadable PDF or Microsoft Word document.
  3. Wait until the generated attachment appears in the conversation.
  4. Wait until the attachment finishes displaying its loading status.
  5. Open the attachment directly from the conversation.
  6. Tap the Download button.
  7. Alternatively, open the sharing menu and select “Save to Files.”
  8. Select a folder and attempt to save the document.
  9. Open the iOS Files application and check the selected folder.

Actual result

  • The file is not saved to the selected folder.
  • Tapping Download does not produce a usable saved file.
  • Using Share → Save to Files also fails to complete the operation.
  • No clear error message is displayed.
  • The interface may appear to process the request, but the file does not appear in the Files application.
  • Repeating the operation or generating the file under a different filename does not resolve the problem.

Expected result

The generated PDF or DOCX file should be downloaded or saved to the selected location in the iOS Files application when the user taps Download or selects Share → Save to Files.

If saving fails, the application should display a clear error message instead of silently completing without creating a file.

Important comparison: Library works

The generated files are automatically available in ChatGPT Library.

When I open the same file from Library and use the sharing or saving options, the document can be saved successfully to the iOS Files application.

Therefore:

  • File generation works.
  • The generated file is valid.
  • ChatGPT Library storage works.
  • The iOS Files application works.
  • The problem appears to be limited to downloading or sharing the file directly from the conversation attachment preview.

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Tested more than one generated document.
  • Tested both PDF and DOCX files.
  • Tested with VPN disabled.
  • Tested over Wi-Fi.
  • Tested over LTE/5G cellular data.
  • Confirmed that the loading indicator had completed before attempting to save.
  • Confirmed that the file was not present in the selected Files folder.
  • Confirmed that saving the same generated file from ChatGPT Library works.

These tests make a general internet connection problem, an invalid generated file, or an iOS Files permission problem less likely.

Frequency

The issue was reproducible consistently during multiple attempts between September 1 and September 4, 2026.

Impact

This significantly affects professional workflows involving contracts, invoices, reports, and other generated PDF or Word documents.

Users can currently retrieve the files through ChatGPT Library, but this is an additional workaround and does not replace the expected Download and Share functionality inside the conversation.

Similar public reports

Other iPhone users have recently described similar behavior, including the save interface closing before the destination can be selected and the document not appearing in Files:

Support status

I have already reported this through OpenAI Support. The issue was documented as an iOS file-download/save problem. I am posting it publicly so that other affected users can confirm whether they are experiencing the same behavior and provide their own device and application versions.

Could OpenAI please confirm whether this is a known iOS regression and whether a fix is being developed?
