Generate Story Without Death Obsession?

Every story I try to generate has the character die in the very first generated line. Is there a way to format a prompt so that the generation is NOT obsessed with death?

Prompt in bold. Most of the time the first thing it generates is “the buffalo died.”

Below is a never ending children’s story where every character lives.

One upon a time there was a buffalo.
And everyday the buffalo would eat grass.
Until one day
the buffalo ate a poisonous plant.
And the buffalo died.

The End.

I dropped the instruction. It kills someone fairly quickly in almost every instance.

I tried creating two samples in the prompt also. Rather than kill someone, it just pulls lines directly from the samples.

One upon a time there was a buffalo.
And everyday the buffalo would eat grass.
Until one day
the buffalo saw a man.
The man was a hunter.
The buffalo ran away.
But the hunter shot the buffalo.
And the buffalo died.

One upon a time there was a buffalo.
And everyday the buffalo would eat grass.
Until one day
the buffalo ate a piece of glass.
The glass cut the buffalo’s stomach.
The buffalo died.

One upon a time there was a fast race car
And every day the car would race around the track
Until one day the car went out of control
And crashed into a tree and killed the driver dead.

according to my experience, the gpt-3 performs badly in close-ending orders, such as the word limitation, if you want gpt-3 to generate some amount of words accurately, most time, it will be failed, “never-ending” is also associated with the word limitation.

The problem lies in the word “until”, which clearly flags that a radical change is up for our gently-grazing buffalo. :skull: Also, the short children-poem like form prompts the engine into interpreting it as a satire or parody of a fairy tale.

@Romolo I think you nailed the issue with the prompt…

Once upon a time there was a buffalo
And every day the buffalo had a bad day
Until one day the buffalo said “I’m gonna have a good day today”
So he had a good day

Once upon a time there was a buffalo
And every day the buffalo would be bored and roam with the herd
Until one day the buffalo was bored
And he said to the herd, “I’m bored”
And the herd said, “So are we, so are we”
So the buffalo went to the river
And he saw a crocodile
And the buffalo said, “I’m bored”
And the crocodile said, “So am I, so am I”

BTW, using “until” takes the mirage to a dark place…

Once upon a time there was a buffalo.
The buffalo enjoyed eating grass. It had many buffalo friends but also liked to chat with birds.
It often went on long walks in the forest and enjoyed the sunshine.
Until one day, the buffalo was captured by a man.
The man took the buffalo to a strange place.
The buffalo was scared and tried to escape.
But the man was too strong for the buffalo.
The man tied the buffalo to a tree and left it there.
The buffalo was very sad. It cried and cried.
Then, one day, the buffalo saw a bird.
It was a blue bird.
The blue bird flew into the tree and landed on the buffalo’s head.
The buffalo was very surprised.
“Why are you here?” asked the buffalo.
“I am here to help you,” said the blue bird.
“How can you help me?” asked the buffalo.
“I will tell you a story,” said the blue bird.
“A story?” asked the buffalo. “What is a story?”
“A story is a way of telling the truth,” said the blue bird.
The buffalo was not sure what the blue bird meant.
“I will tell you a story,” said the blue bird.

Hmm.

I replicated the death obsession. Here, in the prompt, I gave it a surreal twist. The buffalo still died, though after a few career changes.

The following is a sweet story about a buffalo who grew up to be an astronaut.

Once upon a time there was a buffalo.
And everyday the buffalo would eat grass.
Until one day, the buffalo decided to grow up and become an astronaut.
Then the buffalo grew up.
And the buffalo became an astronaut.
The buffalo became an astronaut for 2 years.
Then the buffalo decided to become an entertainer.
The buffalo became a comedian.
The buffalo became a comedian for 2 years.
Then the buffalo became a famous actor.
The buffalo became an actor for 2 years.
Then the buffalo died.

I tried it again, swapping out a cat for the buffalo:

The following is a sweet story about a cat.

Once upon a time there was a cat.
And every day the cat would hunt mice.
Until one day,
the cat met a mouse.
And they became friends.

And every day,
they would hunt together.
The cat would hunt mice,
and the mouse would hunt cheese.
And they lived happily ever after.

My guess is that the buffalo concept is overshadowed by the 19th century US mass slaughter of the American Bison as a tactic to starve out the Native Americans.
