Finding Old Chats Is a Nightmare

I tend to organize my conversations into Projects, but many chats don’t naturally belong to a specific project, so they remain in the general chat list. Finding those chats later is incredibly frustrating.

The current chat search is too basic and unreliable. It’s slow, the filtering options are extremely limited (for example, you can’t easily filter by date), and the search interface refreshes every time another batch of chat tiles loads or when you are scrolling down (keeps reloading and sending you to the top of the search results), making the experience even more frustrating. The box is too small to navigate properly.

Also, for some reason, the search doesn’t seem to index all of my conversations. When I use the small search box, it only finds chats from the current month, then skips everything in between and jumps straight to chats from October of last year. It appears that many months of conversations are either missing from the search index or simply aren’t being returned, making the feature even less reliable. I, for one, am specifically looking for a chat I had on June 16, but there’s no way to display only the chats from that date.

The chat search definitely deserves its own dedicated page with a much more powerful and reliable interface. At a minimum, it should include:

  • Fast, reliable search results.

  • Advanced filters (date ranges, Projects, attachments, GPT used, etc.).

  • Sorting options (newest, oldest, most recently updated).

  • Visible dates for every conversation.

  • Stable search results that don’t refresh or jump around while more chats are loading.

Even browsing manually through the left sidebar is difficult because conversations aren’t displayed with visible dates. If you only remember approximately when you had a conversation, there’s no practical way to locate it.

As ChatGPT becomes a long-term knowledge repository for many users, finding previous conversations should be as powerful and intuitive as searching emails or documents. Right now, discovering old chats is one of the weakest parts of the overall experience.

Hi @jcv

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. I understand how improvements to search and conversation organization could make a big difference, especially for users who rely on ChatGPT for long-term projects.

Feedback like yours is incredibly valuable, and I'll make sure to pass your suggestions along to the team for consideration.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
