File uploads consistently fail with “Unknown error” on ChatGPT Pro — image uploads work normally

Hi,

I’m experiencing a consistent issue with file uploads in ChatGPT Pro.

Whenever I try to attach a non-image file to a conversation, the upload starts but remains stuck and never completes. After some time, ChatGPT displays a red notification at the top of the screen saying:

“An unknown error occurred”

Image uploads, however, work normally. The issue seems to affect non-image file attachments specifically.

Environment

  • ChatGPT plan: Pro
  • Operating system: Fedora 44
  • Browsers tested: Firefox and Brave
  • Affected file types tested: Markdown (.md), PDF (.pdf), and other non-image files
  • Working uploads: Images

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a conversation in ChatGPT.
  2. Click the attachment/upload button.
  3. Select a non-image file, such as a .md or .pdf file.
  4. The file appears in the attachment area, but the upload remains stuck.
  5. After some time, the upload fails.
  6. ChatGPT displays an “Unknown error” notification.

Expected behavior

The file should finish uploading and become available as an attachment in the conversation.

Actual behavior

The upload remains stuck and eventually fails with an “Unknown error” message.

Additional details

  • The issue is reproducible in both Firefox and Brave, so it does not appear to be specific to a single browser.
  • I have tested multiple non-image file types, including Markdown and PDF, and they all fail.
  • Image attachments continue to work normally.
  • The problem is consistently reproducible.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Since the behavior is consistent across two different browsers and multiple file types, it seems to be related specifically to ChatGPT’s non-image file upload handling.

Hi @maiki,
