Feature Suggestion – Quote/Reply to Specific Text Segments

I would like to suggest an improvement to the way users interact with ChatGPT responses, especially for those who use the tool in a more reflective and in-depth way.

Currently, responses are presented as a single block of text. When a user wants to comment on or expand a specific part of the response, they need to manually copy and paste that section, which breaks the natural flow of the conversation and makes the experience feel more mechanical.

The suggestion is to implement a feature similar to replying to a specific message segment, as seen in messaging apps like WhatsApp. Users would be able to select a specific paragraph or sentence from the response and interact directly with that part.

In practice, each paragraph could function as a selectable element. By clicking or highlighting it, the user could reply directly to that section, allowing the conversation to become more dynamic, contextual, and precise.

This feature would bring several benefits:

  • Make interactions more natural and fluid

  • Enable deeper and more focused discussions

  • Eliminate the need to copy and paste text

  • Improve the experience for users who use ChatGPT for reflection, study, or idea development

I believe this improvement would shift conversations from a linear format to a more interactive and layered experience, closer to active reading, where users can highlight and engage with specific parts of the content.

Hi @Daniel_Castaire

I like this suggestion, being able to reply to a specific paragraph would make longer responses much easier to work with.

I agree the current experience can feel a bit “blocky” when you want to focus on one part. While highlighting text and referencing it works as a workaround, it doesn’t preserve a clear connection between the response and the follow-up.

A more native “reply to this section” interaction could make conversations feel more contextual and easier to navigate, especially for deeper discussions.

I’ll pass this along to the team, feedback like this is super valuable when it comes to improving how people actually interact with responses.
