Feature Suggestion: Persistent, User-Editable Preference Database for ChatGPT Pro Users

Problem: Memory Reset Disrupts Long-Term Productivity

As a long-term Pro user relying on ChatGPT for creative strategy, client work, and research, I’d like to propose a fundamental usability improvement.

ChatGPT’s memory resets or lapses (especially when unannounced) create significant workflow interruptions. When memory is wiped—whether due to a technical reset, new session, or account transition—I’m forced to reintroduce personal preferences, formatting rules, tone of voice, and project context from scratch.

This undermines trust and makes ChatGPT less usable for sustained professional work.

Solution: An Opt-In, Persistent, User-Editable Preference Database

I propose the implementation of a user-facing system that allows for:

  • Persistent memory, stored securely and tied to the user account
  • Editable preferences, accessible through the settings panel or a dedicated tab
  • User-controlled toggles for tone, formatting rules, writing voice, and ongoing projects
  • Project tagging, allowing memory to be segmented by client, brand, or creative work
  • Transparency — users can view exactly what the system “knows” or remembers, and update it at will

This feature would radically improve the long-term usefulness of ChatGPT for power users. It’s also easy to imagine this as a premium option that enhances value for Plus or Team subscribers.

Why This Matters

ChatGPT has huge potential for professional workflows, but productivity suffers when the assistant “forgets” who we are. An editable database lets us treat ChatGPT like a real team member—one that learns and adapts over time, not one with chronic amnesia.

This is not just a convenience request. It’s a strategic improvement that will allow OpenAI to better serve:

  • Writers and editors
  • Brand strategists
  • Creative professionals
  • Developers and technical teams
  • Project-based consultants
  • Educators and researchers

Final Note

I’m happy to work with early beta access or provide deeper UX insight if the product team is exploring this feature. I believe this relatively simple change could significantly strengthen ChatGPT’s place in the professional tool ecosystem.

Thanks for reading.
