ChatGPT is already excellent at conversations, but long-running projects can become difficult to continue across separate chats.
I suggest adding a Project State system that lets ChatGPT maintain a structured snapshot of ongoing work.
For example:
Project: Alpine Meadow
Status: 72%
Current goal:
Fix character movement and night mode
Decisions:
- Walk → Run should trigger automatically
- Character should maintain its current direction
- Aurora should appear during night mode
Files/components:
- player.js
- environment.js
Current blocker:
Mobile touch movement
Next recommended action:
Test touch-direction handling
At the end of a conversation, ChatGPT could automatically update this state. In a new conversation, the user could simply say:
“Continue Alpine Meadow.”
ChatGPT would restore the relevant project context instead of requiring the user to explain everything again.
This could also work with GitHub repositories, uploaded files, Canvas, Skills, and Tasks.
Why this would be useful:
It would make ChatGPT feel less like a collection of isolated conversations and more like a persistent AI workspace that understands the state of the user’s work.
An optional “View Project State” panel could let users inspect, edit, or reset what ChatGPT is carrying forward.
I think this would be especially valuable for software development, research, studying, writing, and other long-running projects.
