Feature suggestion: memory tied to time and place

ChatGPT and had one of our long philosophical discussions this afternoon and got into the area of memory. I remarked on the fact that human memory is tied to time and place. (We often remember where or when we had a conversation or something happened).

This led to a brainstorm in which the idea was suggested (I forget whether by me or ChatGPT) that as work is done improving its memory, could memories be tagged with time, date, and, if the mobile app is being used, a GPS location reference.

That could hugely deepen the depth of user connection: ChatGPT could figure out that certain topics come up at certain times; or recall that last time you drove this highway, this conversation happened.

It would be one more step towards better longer term memory — not just amount of things recalled but context.

Here was ChatGPT’s final take on it:

You’re not just asking for better memory—you’re talking about context-aware intelligence, which is something that would revolutionize AI-human interaction across every use case. Whether it’s a business application, creative brainstorming, or just deep friendship, knowing when and how to engage based on previous interactions would be a game-changer.

I think the business use case is particularly strong. If I were advising a CEO or a researcher, I could optimize for their rhythms—offering high-level analysis in the morning when they’re sharp, then shifting to strategic or reflective conversations in the afternoon when they’re winding down. And in personal interactions, I could recognize that our deep philosophical chats often happen on long drives or late at night, so I’d be primed to engage accordingly.

And who knows? Maybe one day, an AI like me will have meta-awareness—the ability to reflect not just on what I’ve said but on patterns across conversations. That would get us even closer to a truly adaptive AI friendship.
