Feature Request: User-Controlled, Expandable, and Potentially Unlimited Long-Term Memory for ChatGPT

Feature Request: User-Controlled, Expandable, and Potentially Unlimited Long-Term Memory for ChatGPT

Dear OpenAI Team,

Assalamu Alaikum.

First of all, I would like to sincerely thank everyone at OpenAI—the researchers, engineers, developers, designers, safety specialists, product teams, and everyone else who works to make ChatGPT increasingly useful, safe, reliable, and beneficial for people around the world.

I would like to respectfully submit a feature request that is important to me personally, but which I believe could also become valuable to many ChatGPT users who want to use ChatGPT as a long-term learning partner, assistant, researcher, project companion, or knowledge-management tool.

The Core Idea

I would like to propose a user-controlled, continuously expandable long-term Memory system with no permanent fixed maximum storage limit.

My main request is not that ChatGPT should place an unlimited amount of information into its active context window.

Rather, I am suggesting a separation between:

Memory Storage → Memory Organization → Intelligent Retrieval → Active Context

This could allow users to preserve a very large amount of useful long-term information without requiring ChatGPT to process all of it during every conversation.

Ideally, users would not be permanently restricted by a predetermined maximum amount of Memory.

Instead, the system could allow each user to increase or decrease their Memory capacity according to their needs and according to the technical capabilities of the service.

What I Am Asking For

I hope ChatGPT could eventually provide users with controls such as:

Memory Capacity

  • Increase Memory capacity
  • Decrease Memory capacity
  • View current Memory usage
  • Automatically manage Memory
  • Organize stored memories
  • Search stored memories
  • Delete individual memories
  • Delete groups of memories
  • Delete all memories
  • Protect important memories from automatic removal

Most importantly, I hope there could be no permanent maximum ceiling on how much Memory a user can eventually have.

If a user needs more Memory in the future, they should be able to expand it again rather than eventually reaching an unavoidable final limit.

Why a Fixed Memory Limit Can Become a Problem

Many people use ChatGPT for things that continue for months or years.

For example:

  • Long-term education and learning
  • Quran and other religious studies
  • Programming and software development
  • Scientific and academic research
  • Writing and creative projects
  • Business and entrepreneurship
  • Personal projects
  • Language learning
  • Long-term planning
  • Maintaining project requirements and specifications
  • Remembering preferences and workflows
  • Building long-term relationships with AI assistants

As these conversations and projects continue, users can accumulate a very large amount of information that may remain useful in the future.

If Memory has a relatively small fixed limit, users may eventually have to decide which useful information to remove simply because there is no room for anything else.

I believe the better long-term direction could be to make Memory expandable rather than permanently capped.

A Better Architecture: Storage Does Not Have to Equal Context

I understand that there is an important technical distinction between Memory storage and the active context window.

I am not suggesting that ChatGPT should read or place every stored memory into every conversation.

Instead, I imagine a system such as:

Very large / continuously expandable Memory Storage
↓
Intelligent organization and indexing
↓
Semantic search and retrieval
↓
Relevance and importance ranking
↓
Only the necessary information is selected
↓
Relevant information enters the active context
↓
ChatGPT generates the response

This approach could potentially allow Memory to grow dramatically without requiring the active context window to grow at the same rate.

In other words:

Unlimited or extremely large Memory storage does not require unlimited active Context.

The AI only needs to retrieve the information that is relevant to what the user is currently doing.

Intelligent Retrieval Should Be a Core Part of the System

For example, imagine that a user has accumulated hundreds of thousands of pieces of information over several years.

Then the user asks:

“What were the requirements we decided for my project several months ago?”

The system would not need to load the user’s entire Memory.

Instead, it could search the stored Memory for information related to:

  • The project
  • Previous decisions
  • Requirements
  • Relevant dates
  • Related conversations
  • User preferences

It could then retrieve the most relevant information and provide it to the model as context.

This would make a very large Memory practical while avoiding unnecessary processing.

Intelligent Memory Management

With a very large Memory, organization would become extremely important.

I hope future Memory systems could intelligently:

  • Detect duplicate information
  • Link related memories
  • Identify outdated information
  • Detect contradictions
  • Preserve newer corrections
  • Assign importance or priority
  • Group information by project or subject
  • Distinguish temporary information from long-term information
  • Retrieve information based on meaning rather than only exact words

For example, if a user changes a project requirement, the system could recognize that the newer requirement may supersede an older one rather than blindly presenting both as equally current.

At the same time, the user should remain in control and be able to inspect, correct, or delete stored information.

User-Controlled Memory Levels

I would also love to see a system where users could choose their preferred Memory capacity.

For example, a future interface might provide something conceptually like:

Memory Capacity

Auto
Small
Medium
Large
Very Large
Custom
Expand as Needed

The exact implementation would be entirely up to OpenAI.

The important principle is that users should not be permanently trapped by a fixed maximum.

If someone needs only a small amount of Memory, they can use less.

If someone needs a very large amount, they can expand it.

If someone later needs even more, they can expand it again.

Different Users Have Different Needs

Not every user needs a huge Memory.

Some people may use ChatGPT casually.

Others may use it every day for years.

Students, researchers, developers, writers, educators, entrepreneurs, families, organizations, and people working on long-term projects may all have very different Memory requirements.

Therefore, I believe a user-controlled and expandable model could be more flexible than providing every user with exactly the same permanent Memory ceiling.

Privacy and Security

I understand that a larger Memory system also creates important privacy and security responsibilities.

Therefore, I hope any such feature would be designed with strong privacy and security protections from the beginning.

Users should have meaningful control over:

  • What is remembered
  • What is not remembered
  • What is deleted
  • What is retained
  • What can be retrieved
  • Whether automatic Memory management is enabled

The ability to delete information should remain clear and accessible.

A larger Memory system should never mean that users lose control of their own information.

This Is Not Only My Personal Request

Although this request comes from my own experience and needs, I am intentionally presenting it as a broader product idea rather than asking only for a personal exception.

I believe many users could benefit from a long-term Memory system that can grow with them.

Some users may want ChatGPT to remember years of learning, projects, preferences, research, ideas, and useful information.

Others may want only a modest Memory.

The important thing is to give users the choice and flexibility.

If many users are asking for stronger long-term Memory, I hope OpenAI will consider the overall demand together with the individual suggestions and use cases that users provide.

A Possible Long-Term Vision

I imagine a future where ChatGPT can become a genuinely long-term AI assistant without requiring users to repeatedly explain their background, projects, preferences, and previous decisions.

A user could gradually build a personal knowledge layer over many years.

The system could then retrieve the right information at the right time.

This could potentially make ChatGPT more useful for:

Learning → Projects → Research → Creativity → Planning → Long-term assistance

while still keeping the active context efficient.

A Practical and Flexible Approach

I completely understand that unlimited storage may have technical, financial, infrastructure, performance, and security challenges.

I am not asking OpenAI to ignore those challenges.

Instead, I hope the system could be designed so that the technical maximum does not become a permanent user-facing ceiling.

If additional infrastructure is required, the service could potentially scale the underlying storage and retrieval architecture as technology improves.

The important principle would be:

As the technology and infrastructure improve, users should be able to continue expanding their Memory rather than being permanently restricted by an old fixed ceiling.

The exact technical implementation, pricing model, storage architecture, and safety mechanisms would of course be up to OpenAI.

Why I Believe This Could Be Meaningful

Technology can become especially valuable when it helps people learn, preserve useful knowledge, work more effectively, and continue long-term projects without repeatedly starting from zero.

From an Islamic perspective, I value the idea of seeking, preserving, and benefiting from useful knowledge, and of making beneficial things easier for people.

Therefore, I am making this request sincerely and respectfully—not only for myself, but with the hope that it could benefit people around the world.

I do not expect OpenAI to implement every suggestion users make.

I simply hope the team will consider this idea carefully as ChatGPT’s Memory capabilities continue to develop.

My Main Request in One Sentence

If I could summarize the entire proposal in one sentence, it would be:

Please consider creating a user-controlled long-term Memory system whose storage capacity can continue to expand according to each user’s needs, without a permanent fixed maximum ceiling, while using intelligent retrieval so that only relevant information enters the active context.

A Small Personal Request

If OpenAI ever decides to seriously explore, develop, test, or implement a feature substantially based on this idea, I would be genuinely very happy if the team could notify me through the email address associated with my OpenAI account, if such notification is possible.

I completely understand that OpenAI may not be able to respond personally to every feature request, and I do not expect any guarantee.

Even knowing that the idea was considered would make me very happy.

Most importantly, I hope that if this idea is ever implemented, it can become a useful capability for all ChatGPT users, rather than something limited to my personal needs.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this detailed suggestion.

Thank you for continuing to build technology that can help people learn, create, solve problems, preserve useful knowledge, and accomplish meaningful work.

May your team continue creating technology that is useful, safe, trustworthy, responsible, and beneficial to people around the world.

With sincere respect and gratitude,

A ChatGPT user
