Feature Request: Timeline-Based Long-Term Memory

I would love to see a timeline-based memory system for ChatGPT.

Current memory is already useful for remembering what a user has said and retrieving relevant information from previous conversations. However, I think there is another important dimension that could make long-term memory much more powerful: time.

I don’t just want ChatGPT to remember what I said. I want it to understand when I said it, how much time has passed, and how my thoughts, emotions, and circumstances changed during that time.

For example, I might start a conversation thread in January 2026 and return to the same thread in July 2026. These messages may appear sequentially in the conversation history, but they are not simply “Message A → Message B.”

They represent:

January — who I was then → six months of life and experiences → July — who I am now.

The passage of time between two messages is itself meaningful context. It is not merely the sequential order of text messages, but the past and present along a longitudinal timeline.

This could also be useful on a much shorter timescale. Suppose I send 50 messages over the course of one month about different aspects of the same emotional situation. With accurate timestamps, ChatGPT could potentially recognize a trajectory such as:

  • Days 1–3: anxiety and uncertainty
  • Day 5: a significant event changes my perspective
  • Days 6–12: gradual acceptance
  • Day 20: the same issue resurfaces, but I am thinking about it differently

The goal would not be for ChatGPT to diagnose my mental state. Rather, it could understand how my expressed thoughts and emotions evolved over time, based on what I actually said at different points.

This would also help prevent long-term memory from flattening a person’s history into a single static summary.

For example, if I said six months ago:

“I definitely don’t want this anymore.”

and today I say:

“Actually, I’m reconsidering it.”

the system should not necessarily treat one statement as replacing the other. The change itself is meaningful. The fact that I once felt one way and later felt differently is part of my history.

I think this could make long-term conversations feel much more natural. The important information isn’t only what happened, but when it happened and how the person changed afterward.

In short, I would love for ChatGPT to remember not only what I said, but where that thought belonged in the whole timeline.

Ideally, this timeline would also be transparent and user-controlled, allowing users to inspect, correct, or delete memories and disable the feature if they wish.
