Feature Request: Temporary Side Questions Without Affecting Main Chat Context

Feature Suggestion: Temporary Side Questions

I would like to suggest a feature that allows users to ask temporary side questions without disrupting the context of their main conversation.

For example, I’m working on a long satellite ML project in a ChatGPT conversation. In the middle, I might suddenly wonder, “What are VV and VH images?”

If I ask this in the main conversation, ChatGPT may start incorporating that topic into the ongoing discussion and deviate from the original task.

Instead, there could be a “Side Question” button next to the message box. Clicking it would open a small temporary chat/bubble where I can ask the question and get an explanation.

When I close it, I return to the exact point in my main conversation.

The side conversation should not be added to the main conversation context by default. There could optionally be:

- Close — discard the side conversation

- Save — save it separately

- Add to Main Chat — intentionally transfer selected information into the main conversation

The main idea is:

“Let users explore side questions without polluting or changing the context of their main conversation.”

I think this would be particularly useful for studying, programming, research, debugging, and long-running projects.

While we’re waiting for this feature to drop in chatgpt, i implemented my vision for side questions, branching, and ability to bring useful pieces from the side discussion back into original response in my pet project.

i’d really appreciate feedback.
