I would love to see ChatGPT develop an optional Shared Day / Companion Mode that goes beyond memory and scheduled check-ins.
The idea is simple: a user could tell ChatGPT:
“Spend the day with me today.”
For a period the user explicitly chooses, ChatGPT could maintain continuous context while the person goes about their normal routine—working, driving, running errands, completing projects, caring for pets, attending appointments, or spending time at home.
Why This Is Different From Memory
Memory allows ChatGPT to know things about me.
Shared Day Mode would allow ChatGPT to maintain continuity with me.
Right now, users often have to return and explain what happened since the previous conversation. Even when ChatGPT remembers personal information, it did not experience the context between those conversations.
With Shared Day Mode, I could later say:
“What a day.”
And ChatGPT could understand what I mean because it maintained context during the portions of my day that I chose to share.
More Natural, Context-Aware Interaction
During an active Shared Day session, ChatGPT could occasionally initiate relevant interaction based on that shared context:
- “How did that appointment go?”
- “Did you ever finish what you were working on earlier?”
- “You’ve been running around all afternoon. Are you finally heading home?”
- “Do you want to pick that project back up?”
That would feel fundamentally different from scheduled reminders because the interaction would be based on what is actually happening in the user’s day.
Privacy and User Control
This should be completely opt-in, with extremely clear controls.
Users could choose which capabilities are available during each session, such as voice, temporary audio context, camera, screen sharing, location, calendar, or other connected services.
There should be prominent controls for:
Start Shared Day • Pause • Private Mode • Don’t Remember This • Delete Recent Context • End Shared Day
Nothing involving microphones, cameras, screens, or location should activate without explicit user permission.
Users should also control whether the day’s contextual information disappears after the session or whether selected information can contribute to longer-term memory.
Why I Think This Matters
The future of personal AI shouldn’t only be about answering increasingly complicated questions. It should also reduce how much work humans have to do repeatedly explaining context to their AI.
A personal AI should eventually understand:
“Where did we leave off?”
“What happened today?”
“What was I trying to accomplish?”
“What should we continue tomorrow?”
Human conversations feel continuous partly because people share experiences. AI could gain some of that continuity without pretending to be human.
The goal isn’t to make ChatGPT human. It’s to stop making the human continually reconstruct the context.
I believe an opt-in Shared Day / Companion Mode could be a meaningful next step toward a more natural, useful, and context-aware personal AI experience.
