Thought about that, too! Maybe it’s even smarter to include an option for the user to just hide the messages in the chat so that chatgpt coul still read them in the background for better analyses etc.

Please prioritize this feature; I like KevinKranke’s implemention suggestion of it a lot.

So glad this feature request is getting so much attention!!!

I also like the idea of being able to minimize and expand both prompts and responses within a conversation as well to make scrolling through large chats easier. You could also provide a way for users to include or exclude specific prompts/responses from consideration in future responses.

In addition, it would be very beneficial to have graphical representation of each prompt/response to quickly scroll through, similar to a table of contents for the conversation. When you find what you need, you can click the prompt and the conversation will immediately scroll right to it. If that’s too complicated to implement, then a search feature specific to the current conversation could help, but I think it would still take too long to find what you’re looking for compared to a table of contents of sorts.

Adding my voice too, with studying, coding and trying to groom research responses selective message deletion in chats will help refine final outcomes and summaries. This is especially true when ChatGPT has mis-stepped on an answer.

Agreed. Feature much needed!

This is absolutely essential for effective use and management of information within ChatGPT. How such a basic UX feature as this has not been implemented yet is beyond me.

Very want this feature, coz it is like One by One select (manual intensive) or sweeping all gone…, at least let us to select which to keep then remove all unnecessary chat history.
I think it benefits user and OpenAI mutually.

I see everyone is still asking and waiting for a response about this request. Here’s my turn to ask for it. I collaborated on some recipes, asked chat to save it in my projects folder on recipes. I said specifically, just the recipes and not the whole chat. It didn’t do that, and now I have to scroll through all the chat during the collaboration, and the back forth about it didn’t save it as it said it did, and on and on. That does not work for a collection of recipes in the folder. If I can only delete the entire chat, which includes the recipes, then do I have to add them back in manually? Please put this feature together.

Please! This would be so helpful! It’s one of the strongest lack of efficiency when working with Chat GPT.
Some times GPT conversation gives a bad response that would strongly affect the quality of the rest of the thread. Currently, i could only cheat it by regenerating an answer by editing the prompt and immediately stop regeneration.
But this is not always sufficient or possible.

This would be such a useful feature! I don’t see many downsides, if any. I hope it is rolled out on the next update! It definitely seems popular and desired!

That is not at all what this request is about though. We want to edit/delete inside of the chat.

Same here. In fact I have ended my subscription and used other (partly worse) AIs for months now, mostly because they allowing free editing and deletion of the created text. Canvas is a good start but does not really fulfill that need as is.

For those waiting for ChatGPT to support selective message editing or deletion, an alternative is available here. Though originally designed for AI-driven 3D modeling, it includes a ChatGPT-style chat interface that implements the requested features.

Pros:

  • Editable Chat Messages: Users can modify any message mid-conversation and regenerate responses, allowing for iterative refinement—particularly useful for coding tasks.
  • Code Iteration Support: Prompts that involve logic or animation can be tested and refined directly in the app, with AI continuing from the modified version.
  • 3D Modeling Integration: A functional 3D modeling engine is included for those who need it.

Cons:

  • No Python Execution: Unlike ChatGPT, it cannot run Python code.
  • Text Only: Multi-modal input/output such as images or audio is not supported.
  • No Web Search: It does not support browsing or real-time search features.
  • Separate API Key Needed: The app requires users to supply their own OpenAI API key. OpenAI charges API use separately from ChatGPT subscriptions, on a pay-as-you-go basis. This can be cost-efficient depending on usage.

This needs to happen natively and quickly. This has been outstanding for over a year. I just ruined a chat I had simply because I was in the chat and asked an off topic question.

I use this to help run my business and while yes, I save important bits to memory, I’ve been using this for 6 weeks and had to clear memories. It woukd also help when the chat thread gets laggy because of all the responses.

Signed in also in support of this request, why does it seem so hard to do ?
