Feature Request: QR Code Login for ChatGPT

Feature Request: QR Code Login for ChatGPT

Hello OpenAI team,

I would like to suggest a feature that could make signing into ChatGPT on other devices much faster and more convenient: QR Code Login.

How it could work

If I open ChatGPT on a computer or another device where I am not signed in, I could choose:

“Sign in with QR code”

The website would display a temporary QR code.

I would then open the ChatGPT mobile app on my phone, where I am already signed in, and scan the QR code.

The mobile app would show a confirmation:

Sign in to ChatGPT on Windows PC?
Device: Chrome on Windows
Location: Astana
Allow / Cancel

After confirming, the browser would automatically become signed in to my ChatGPT account.

Why this could be valuable

One of the problems with using ChatGPT on a new device is that users have to go through the normal authentication process. Some users may not remember whether they originally registered with Google, Apple, Microsoft, email/password, etc.

This can be especially inconvenient on:

  • university computers;
  • work computers;
  • shared or temporary devices;
  • TVs and other devices with a browser;
  • computers where users don’t want to manually enter their credentials.

A QR login could turn this into a very simple process:

Open ChatGPT → Scan QR → Confirm → You’re in.

Potential benefits for OpenAI

I also think this feature could have benefits beyond convenience.

1. Fewer unnecessary account creations

If signing into an existing account becomes extremely easy, users may have less reason to create a new account simply because they cannot be bothered to go through the normal login process.

This could potentially help keep users connected to their existing accounts and reduce unnecessary account duplication.

2. Better user retention

A user who can instantly access their existing conversations, settings, memories, and other account features on a new device has a smoother experience.

Instead of thinking:

“It’s easier to just create another account,”

the user could simply scan a QR code and continue using their existing account.

3. Potential subscription opportunity

The feature could also make the value of an existing account more visible.

For example, a user who normally uses the free version could quickly log into their own account on a computer and immediately have access to their existing ChatGPT history and personalized experience.

If the overall experience becomes more convenient, this could potentially make upgrading to a paid plan more attractive because the user is already consistently using the same account across devices.

I would treat this as a potential product/business benefit rather than a guaranteed result, but I think it is worth considering.

Security

For security, the QR code should contain only a short-lived, one-time authentication request rather than account credentials.

The actual authorization would happen through the already authenticated ChatGPT mobile app, where the user would explicitly confirm the login.

The QR code could expire after a short period and become invalid immediately after being used.

The confirmation screen could also display information about the device requesting access:

Sign in to ChatGPT on Chrome — Windows — Astana?
Allow / Cancel

This would give users an opportunity to reject suspicious login attempts.

Simple user flow

Computer:
ChatGPT → Sign in → Sign in with QR code → QR appears

↓

Phone:
Open ChatGPT → Scan QR → Confirm login

↓

Computer:
Automatically signed in.

I believe this could make cross-device authentication significantly faster while maintaining a strong security model.

If OpenAI has any program for rewarding useful product feedback or feature ideas, I would also be interested in participating.

Thank you for considering the suggestion.
