Feature Request: Precise Message Timestamps and Information Version Awareness for Long ChatGPT Conversations

Feature Request: Precise Message Timestamps and Information Version Awareness for Long ChatGPT Conversations

Proposed by: Mohammad Riyadh Jumah
Date proposed: September 3, 2026

Problem

Long ChatGPT conversations often evolve over hours, days, weeks, or even months.

During these conversations, users may discuss several versions of the same idea, code, recommendation, technical configuration, calculation, decision, or result. Earlier information may later be corrected, improved, or superseded.

Currently, when users return to a long conversation, it can be difficult to determine exactly when a particular message was written and whether it represents the latest version of the information.

This creates a risk that a user may accidentally copy or rely on an older recommendation instead of the newer, corrected, or approved version.

Proposed Feature

Display a precise date and time timestamp for every user message and every ChatGPT response.

For example:

User · Sep 3, 2026 · 3:21 PM

ChatGPT · Sep 3, 2026 · 3:23 PM

The detailed timestamp could optionally include seconds when required.

To avoid visual clutter, the timestamp could be displayed in small text or shown when the user hovers over or taps the message.

Why This Is Important

The timestamp would allow users to:

  • Identify which information is newer or older.

  • Track how recommendations and decisions evolved.

  • Avoid accidentally using superseded code, instructions, calculations, or technical configurations.

  • Correlate ChatGPT discussions with real-world events, system logs, incidents, meetings, emails, and troubleshooting activities.

  • Navigate and audit long-running professional conversations more reliably.

This would be particularly valuable for software development, database administration, cybersecurity, engineering, research, financial analysis, project management, technical support, and other professional workflows.

Real-World Example

During a database troubleshooting conversation, a user may initially have:

FRA Limit: 300 GB

Later, after analysis and discussion, the configuration may be changed to:

FRA Limit: 350 GB

Additional measurements may also change over time.

When returning to a very long conversation, visible timestamps would immediately help the user distinguish the old state from the current state and reduce the possibility of acting on outdated information.

Optional Enhancement: Information Version Awareness

The feature could later be extended beyond timestamps.

When ChatGPT detects that a later message updates or supersedes an earlier recommendation, the older message could optionally display:

“A newer update to this information exists later in this conversation.”

The user could click the notice to jump directly to the newer information.

This would effectively introduce lightweight information version tracking into conversational AI.

Expected Benefit

ChatGPT conversations are increasingly used as long-term working environments rather than simple question-and-answer sessions.

Adding precise timestamps—and eventually information version awareness—would make long conversations safer, easier to navigate, easier to audit, and significantly more useful for professional work.

The core principle is simple:

Users should be able to know not only what ChatGPT said, but when it was said and whether newer information has superseded it.

Hey mjumah.utmjumah.ut, welcome to the forum!

Thanks for sharing this feature request!

I agree that precise message timestamps and better awareness of when information was introduced could be valuable.

I'll surface this feedback to the product team for consideration.

To keep feature requests consolidated, I'll be closing this topic. Thanks again for sharing!
