I use ChatGPT extensively at work, and one of my favorite features is Read Aloud. I often have ChatGPT read longer responses to me while I continue working.
There is one surprisingly frustrating problem: I need a Pause button.
I work in a busy, lively workplace. Coworkers come into my office, the phone rings, people ask questions, and interruptions are simply part of the workday. If I’m halfway through a long and interesting ChatGPT response and someone interrupts me, I need to temporarily stop listening.
Right now, stopping Read Aloud can mean losing my place and having to replay a significant portion of the response. With a long answer, I can end up listening to the beginning several times because I keep getting interrupted.
What I would love to see is:
-
Pause — temporarily stop Read Aloud at the exact current position.
-
Resume — continue from that exact position.
-
Ideally, a simple playback progress bar or scrubber so I can move backward or forward if I missed something.
This would make Read Aloud considerably more practical for people using ChatGPT in real-world environments: offices, classrooms, workshops, homes with children, commuting, doing household tasks, and anywhere else interruptions happen.
It would also be a meaningful usability and accessibility improvement for people who rely heavily on listening rather than continuously reading the screen.
And, with affection for whoever designs the audio controls:
Please don’t design Read Aloud as though every ChatGPT user is sitting alone in a basement on a deserted island. Some of us have coworkers. ![]()
Seriously, though, Pause/Resume seems like a small control that would make a huge difference in how usable Read Aloud is throughout an actual workday.
Thank you for considering it!
