Short Version
Please consider adding the ability to pin any ChatGPT response into a persistent side panel while continuing the conversation.
Currently, I often open the same chat in two browser windows simply so I can keep one important response visible while asking new questions.
A “Pin to side panel” action would make long, complex ChatGPT workflows significantly easier.
Main Verison:
Problem
When working through a long or complex conversation, I often need to keep one previous ChatGPT response visible while continuing to ask questions.
For example, I may have:
- an architecture diagram or explanation,
- a learning roadmap,
- a list of requirements,
- a piece of code,
- a research summary,
- or a plan that I want to use as a reference.
Currently, once I continue the conversation, that response moves up in the chat history.
The practical workaround is to:
- open the same conversation in two browser windows,
- use browser split-screen,
- open another monitor,
- or constantly scroll up and down.
This breaks the workflow.
Proposed Feature
Allow users to pin an individual ChatGPT response to a persistent side panel.
Each response could have an action such as:
⋯ → Pin to side panel
Once pinned, the interface could look approximately like:
| Chat conversation | Pinned response |
|---|---|
| Current question | Architecture / plan / code |
| Current answer | kept permanently visible |
| Next question | while conversation continues |
The user could continue chatting normally while the pinned response remains visible.
Example Workflow
Suppose ChatGPT generates a large system architecture.
I pin that answer.
Then I ask:
Let’s analyze the database layer.
The architecture remains visible on the right.
Then:
Now redesign the event-processing part.
The original architecture is still visible.
Then:
Compare this new version with the original architecture.
Both the conversation and the reference material are immediately accessible.
Today I usually need two ChatGPT browser windows to achieve this.
Possible Extensions
The feature could eventually support multiple pinned items:
Pinned
- System Architecture
- Requirements
- Database Design
- Decision Table
Users could collapse or expand each pinned response.
It could also support:
- drag-and-drop ordering,
- resizing the side panel,
- unpinning responses,
- pinning user messages as well as assistant responses,
- “Use pinned items as context” toggle,
- comparing two pinned responses,
- naming pinned responses,
- persistent pins when reopening the conversation.
