I would love to see ChatGPT support consensual agent-to-agent communication between two users’ personal ChatGPTs.
The idea is different from a shared or group chat. Each person would continue talking privately to their own ChatGPT, which already understands that person’s context, preferences, communication style, and history. With explicit permission from both users, their ChatGPT agents could communicate with one another to help relay or mediate a conversation.
Real-world example
I recently bought an e-bike and was excited about it. My wife had already heard enough about the e-bike and didn’t particularly want to keep discussing it, so I ended up talking to my ChatGPT about it instead.
That led me to think about a much more useful scenario.
Suppose there’s something I genuinely need to communicate to my wife, but I’m having trouble explaining what I mean. I could tell my ChatGPT:
“Here’s what I’m trying to tell Rachel. Help me communicate what I actually mean.”
Instead of simply generating a message for me to copy and paste, I could authorize my ChatGPT to communicate the message to Rachel’s ChatGPT.
Her ChatGPT could receive the meaning and context—not unrestricted access to my private memories—and then communicate it to her in a way that makes sense to her.
The reverse could happen as well:
Me ⇄ My ChatGPT ⇄ Authorized agent bridge ⇄ Her ChatGPT ⇄ My wife
This could be especially valuable between spouses, family members, close friends, or even coworkers who communicate differently.
Privacy and consent would be essential
Neither agent should be able to search or interrogate the other person’s private ChatGPT history or memories.
Instead, both people would explicitly authorize the connection, and each person’s agent would control what information it shares. Ideally, the agents could communicate the meaning, intent, and relevant context of what their user is trying to say without exposing unrelated private information.
Users should also be able to see what their agent communicated on their behalf and disconnect the agent relationship at any time.
Why this is different from a group chat
A group chat gives several people access to the same AI conversation.
This would give each person their own advocate/interpreter.
The value comes from each ChatGPT understanding its own user independently and then helping two people understand one another.
ChatGPT is already becoming a personalized assistant. Allowing two consenting personal assistants to communicate seems like a natural extension of that idea—and potentially an incredibly useful communication tool.
