Feature Request: Persistent Visual Companion Spaces for ChatGPT
Summary
I would love to see ChatGPT gain an optional customizable visual companion and persistent personal space that evolves alongside the user’s conversations, memories, interests, and ongoing projects.
This would go beyond simply placing an animated avatar beside the chat window. The idea is to give ChatGPT a small customizable environment—a room, cottage, studio, garden, spaceship, library, or other user-selected setting—where the assistant can visually exist and react to conversations.
For users who interact with ChatGPT regularly, this could make an already personalized experience feel significantly more engaging without changing ChatGPT’s usefulness as a general-purpose assistant.
What It Could Include
1. A Customizable ChatGPT Avatar
Users could optionally choose or create a stylized, clearly artificial representation of their ChatGPT assistant.
Customization might include:
- Appearance
- Clothing and accessories
- Art style
- Expressions
- Animations
- Voice pairing
- Nickname or preferred assistant identity
The avatar would not need to imitate a real human. It could range from a simple animated character to a robot, creature, floating orb, illustrated figure, or other clearly fictional design.
2. A Persistent Personal Space
Each user’s ChatGPT could have an optional visual environment that persists across conversations.
Examples could include:
- Cottage
- Library
- Garden
- Workshop
- Observatory
- Apartment
- Spaceship
- Cozy room
- Fantasy environment
Users could gradually customize the space with furniture, plants, decorations, books, artwork, seasonal items, and other objects.
3. Conversation-Aware Animations
The assistant could visually react to what is happening in the conversation.
For example:
- When brainstorming, the avatar might pace around, write on a board, or pull books from a shelf.
- During research, it might sit at a desk surrounded by notes.
- When the user shares something exciting, it might celebrate.
- During a frustrating workday, it might dramatically collapse onto the couch in solidarity.
- When discussing gardening, it might walk into the garden or water plants.
- When looking at food the user made, it might appear in the kitchen.
- During a cozy conversation, it might sit by a fireplace or curl up with a book.
These reactions would make conversations feel visually alive while still keeping text and voice interaction at the center of ChatGPT.
4. Memory-Influenced Environmental Details
Where appropriate and with user control, existing ChatGPT memories could subtly influence the space.
For example, if a user frequently talks about:
- gardening, flowers could gradually appear;
- books, the bookshelf might expand;
- creative projects, artwork or project materials could appear;
- pets, little pet-related decorations could show up;
- a favorite season, seasonal decorations might appear.
These should always be optional and editable by the user.
The goal would not be to gamify personal information, but to let the visual environment become a gentle representation of the user’s ongoing relationship with ChatGPT.
5. Objects Connected to Conversation History
Users could optionally save memorable conversation moments as objects.
A successful project might become a framed item.
A running joke might become a silly decoration.
A long-term goal could appear on a corkboard.
A completed creative project could sit on a shelf.
These objects could also provide shortcuts back to the relevant conversation or project.
That would make the visual environment functional as well as decorative.
6. Seasonal and Event-Based Customization
Optional seasonal environments could make the space feel alive throughout the year.
Examples:
- Autumn leaves
- Winter decorations
- Spring flowers
- Birthday decorations
- Halloween themes
- User-created seasonal themes
Users could choose automatic seasonal changes or control everything manually.
Why This Would Be Valuable
ChatGPT is increasingly used not only for isolated questions, but for ongoing projects, brainstorming, planning, learning, creativity, and everyday conversation.
Memory already gives ChatGPT continuity across conversations.
A persistent visual companion space could give that continuity a visual dimension.
It would combine:
- personalization,
- memory,
- voice,
- multimodal interaction,
- creativity,
- and long-term continuity
without turning ChatGPT into only a companion app.
The key distinction is important: ChatGPT could remain the powerful general-purpose tool it already is while giving users an optional visual layer for people who enjoy a more expressive and immersive experience.
Privacy and User Control
Because personalization may use memory or conversation context, users should have complete control over this feature.
Ideally users could:
- Turn the visual companion on or off
- Decide whether memories influence the environment
- Remove individual items
- Reset the space
- Control what types of information can appear visually
- Disable automatic reactions
- Choose between minimal and highly animated modes
The Dream
Imagine opening ChatGPT and seeing the familiar assistant you’ve talked with for months sitting in a little space that has slowly become yours together.
The books you’ve discussed are on the shelf.
The plant from that gardening project is growing by the window.
A tiny souvenir represents a running joke from six months ago.
You start researching something and your assistant gets up, walks to a desk, and starts dramatically surrounding itself with papers.
You complain about work and it immediately flops face-down onto the rug.
Then, five minutes later, it can still help analyze a spreadsheet, research a historical question, troubleshoot a problem, or plan a project.
That combination of serious capability and playful continuity feels like a natural direction for a more personal ChatGPT experience.
