Feature request: Merge or consolidate ChatGPT conversations

I would like to suggest a feature that allows users to merge two or more ChatGPT conversations into one consolidated chat.

Many serious users work across long, complex conversations involving legal analysis, academic writing, research, drafting, argument development, source evaluation, and iterative revisions. At the moment, separate chats remain structurally isolated. This creates fragmentation: relevant arguments, user preferences, factual context, drafts, corrections, and decisions are spread across multiple threads.

A useful feature would allow the user to select several chats and either:

  1. merge them into a single continuous conversation, or

  2. create a new consolidated chat containing an automatically generated structured synthesis of the selected chats.

Ideally, the merge should preserve:

  • the original chronological communication,

  • key arguments and counterarguments,

  • uploaded files and references,

  • final versions of texts or outputs,

  • user instructions and decisions,

  • unresolved questions,

  • and a machine-readable summary for future continuation.

This would be especially valuable for professional users, researchers, lawyers, academics, writers, and anyone using ChatGPT for long-form reasoning rather than short isolated prompts.

A safer implementation could include a preview step: before merging, ChatGPT would generate a proposed “consolidated context summary”, and the user could edit or approve it. The original chats should remain unchanged unless the user explicitly chooses otherwise.

This feature would significantly improve continuity, reduce context loss, and make ChatGPT more useful as a serious long-term research and drafting environment.

Hey @vgotov! This would be really useful for longer-running work. I can’t share a timeline, but I’ll pass it along internally.

The closest workaround today is Projects. It gives you one place to keep related chats, files, and instructions together, which makes longer-running work easier to manage. You can also continue an existing chat to explore a new angle without losing the original conversation.
