One feature I’d really like to see in ChatGPT is the ability to proactively bring back interesting ideas from previous conversations when something new makes them relevant.
This is different from ordinary memory.
During conversations, users often come up with ideas, hypotheses or possible solutions that are interesting but not immediately actionable. Months later, new research, products or developments may appear that are directly related — but the user has no reason to remember the old conversation.
For example:
“A few months ago, we discussed an idea about mechanically transferring the weight of a heavy helmet from the user’s neck to a vest. There has since been new research/products related to this concept. Would you like to revisit the idea?”
The important part is not sending random reminders. ChatGPT should only surface an old thread when there is a strong reason to believe the new information is genuinely relevant.
I imagine something like:
Conversation → interesting idea detected → optional “Follow this idea” → ChatGPT monitors for relevant developments → proactive follow-up
It could also have a simple command:
“What ideas have we discussed that are worth revisiting?”
This could be incredibly useful for engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, and anyone who uses ChatGPT as a thinking partner.
To me, the distinction is:
Memory: “What do I know about this user?”
This feature: “What interesting things have we thought about together that are worth looking at again now?”
I think this could make long-term interaction with ChatGPT much more valuable and turn old conversations into a kind of dynamic backlog of ideas.
