ChatGPT Projects are useful for organizing chats, files, and instructions, but they mainly organize containers.
What is still missing is a way to organize the thoughts inside a conversation.
In long-running chats, users should be able to mark individual messages or passages as:
- important
- related to another passage
- an open question
- something to revisit later
Optional tags or short notes would make this even more useful.
Later, a user could ask things like:
“Refer back to the passages I marked as important about trust and verification.”
or:
“Show me all open thoughts related to this project.”
This would be especially valuable for long-term projects, research, technical planning, collections, or conversations that develop over months or years.
Right now, I sometimes use dates and timestamps as a manual workaround so I can refer back to a specific point in a long conversation. A built-in bookmark or anchor system would make this much easier and more reliable.
The key idea is:
Projects organize containers. Markers would organize thoughts.
For long-term use of ChatGPT, I think this could be much more than a convenience feature. It could help preserve relationships between ideas that may only become important months or even years later.
