# Allow Users to Lock Conversation Titles

I would like to request an optional feature that allows users to **lock a conversation title** after they have renamed it.

I understand why ChatGPT automatically updates conversation titles. For many users, especially those with short, topic-focused conversations, dynamic titles are helpful.

However, there is another workflow that becomes increasingly difficult over time.

Some users intentionally maintain long-running conversations as persistent workspaces rather than temporary chats. In these cases, the title represents the identity of the workspace, not simply a summary of the latest discussion.

As conversations naturally evolve, the automatically generated title can change repeatedly. While the new title may accurately reflect the most recent discussion, it can also make the conversation more difficult to recognize later because the original identity has been replaced.

I searched the Community before posting and found that this idea has already been requested by other users. I wanted to add another perspective because I believe it affects long-term organization rather than simply being a cosmetic preference.

## Proposed solution

Add a simple **Lock Title** option.

Suggested behavior:

- Automatic titles remain the default.
- Users may rename a conversation at any time.
- After renaming it, users can optionally lock the title.
- Once locked, ChatGPT would no longer automatically rename that conversation.
- Users could unlock it whenever they choose.

This would preserve the current experience for users who like dynamic titles while giving long-term users a stable organizational anchor.

For those of us who work in ongoing conversations, the title becomes part of our mental map of where work lives. Having the ability to intentionally keep that identity stable would make long-term organization much easier without changing the default behavior for everyone else.

Thank you for considering the suggestion.

Thanks for explaining the workflow. We'll share the request for an optional title lock that keeps long-running chats recognizable with the product team. We don't have a timeline to share.
