I’d like to suggest a “soft reset” option for ChatGPT Work usage limits.
Currently, users can still have a large amount of weekly quota remaining but hit the shorter usage window and be forced to wait several hours. The alternative is using a full reset, which also resets the weekly quota and can waste a large amount of unused capacity.
A better system would let users consciously choose “Continue using weekly quota” when the short-term limit is reached.
For example:
- Short-term limit = normal pacing / protection against accidental overuse
- Weekly quota = the user’s actual remaining usage budget
- Soft reset = bypass the short-term wait by consuming more of the remaining weekly quota
- Hard reset = reserved for when the weekly quota is genuinely exhausted
The UI could clearly warn the user how much weekly capacity they are about to consume.
This would give users much more control over bursty professional workloads without increasing their total included usage. It would also make full resets feel much more valuable, because users wouldn’t need to waste them just to bypass a temporary time window.
My concrete use case: I still had roughly 80% of my weekly Work quota available, but hit the short-term limit during an active client project. To continue immediately, I had to use a full reset and effectively discard most of that remaining weekly capacity.
The overall quota could stay exactly the same — users would simply get more control over when they spend it.
