Feature Request: Let users share only selected messages from a ChatGPT conversation

The idea

I’d like to suggest a Selective Chat Sharing option that allows users to share only specific messages or a selected range of messages from a ChatGPT conversation.

Currently, sharing a conversation can expose much more context than the sender actually intends to share. I think users should have more granular control over exactly which parts of a conversation become visible through a shared link.

The problem

Long ChatGPT conversations often contain a mixture of:

  • Questions and answers that are relevant to the final result
  • Unrelated side questions
  • Personal context
  • Intermediate attempts and mistakes
  • Private information
  • Exploratory discussion that the sender doesn’t want to share

For example, I might have a 50-message conversation but only want to send someone messages 32–36 because they contain the final solution.

I shouldn’t have to share the other 45 messages just to share those 5.

This becomes particularly important when sharing conversations with classmates, colleagues, clients, or publicly.

Proposed solution

Add a second option to the existing Share flow:

Share selected messages

The Share menu could offer:

Share conversation

  • ○ Entire conversation
  • ○ Selected messages

If the user chooses Selected messages, they could select:

  • Individual messages
  • A continuous range of messages
  • Potentially a starting and ending message

Before creating the link, ChatGPT should show a preview of exactly what the recipient will see.

Example

Suppose a conversation contains:

Messages 1–10: Initial discussion
Messages 11–20: Unrelated questions
Messages 21–25: Personal context
Messages 26–30: Final solution

I should be able to select messages 26–30 and generate a link containing only those messages.

Important privacy requirement

The shared link should represent a separate, restricted snapshot, not simply open the original conversation at message 26.

Someone with the link should not be able to scroll outside the selected range or access the unselected messages.

The UI should make this explicit:

:locked: Only the selected messages will be visible through this shared link.

This is important because the purpose isn’t just better navigation — it’s information control.

Suggested UX

1. Tap Share

The existing Share button remains unchanged.

2. Choose sharing scope

Share conversation

◉ Entire conversation
○ Selected messages

3. Select messages

The user can select individual messages or drag/select a continuous range.

For example:

Selected: Messages 26–30

4. Preview

Show exactly what the recipient will see.

Preview — Recipient view

And below it, only the selected messages.

5. Create link

Before generating the link:

:locked: Only the selected messages will be visible through this shared link.

[Create link]

Why I think this would be valuable

Privacy

Users can share useful information without unintentionally exposing unrelated or personal context.

Better communication

Recipients don’t have to read through a long conversation to find the relevant part.

Education

Students could share a particular explanation, solution, or discussion without exposing the rest of their study session.

Collaboration

Developers and teams could share a specific technical discussion without exposing unrelated project context.

Public sharing

People could share a particularly useful ChatGPT interaction without publishing their entire conversation.

Possible future extensions

If the selective-sharing infrastructure exists, it could also support:

  • Manage shared links
  • Revoke a specific shared link
  • Set an expiration date
  • Allow/disable copying
  • Share a selected range with a custom title
  • See exactly which messages are currently shared

These aren’t necessary for the MVP. The core feature could simply be:

Select messages → Preview → Create restricted shared link.

Why this seems like a natural extension

The existing sharing system already supports sharing conversations and, in some contexts, individual responses. The missing piece is granular selection within a conversation.

Instead of choosing only between:

Entire conversation ↔ One response

users could have:

Entire conversation ↔ Selected messages ↔ Individual response

That would give users much better control without changing the basic sharing workflow.

UI concept

I’ve attached a simple unofficial UI concept showing the proposed flow:

Share → Select messages → Choose range → Preview → Create restricted link

This is only a concept/mockup and is not intended to represent an existing OpenAI interface or roadmap.

I’d love to hear whether others would find this useful, especially for privacy, education, coding, and collaboration use cases.

Important clarification / additional context

I found an older Community feature request from 2024 proposing the ability to select specific messages when sharing a chat.

My proposal overlaps with that core functionality, but I want to emphasize the privacy/access-control aspect of the request.

The key requirement I’m proposing is not simply:

“Let me share messages 20–30.”

It is:

“Create a restricted shared snapshot containing only messages 20–30, with no way for the recipient to access the rest of the original conversation.”

I think this distinction is important because a simple message-selection UI would solve convenience, while a restricted snapshot would solve the underlying privacy and information-control problem.

If this functionality is already being considered internally, I’d especially love to see the privacy/access-control aspect included in the design.
