Feature Request: Interactive Task Threads and Stateful Checklists

Feature Request: Interactive Task Threads and Stateful Checklists

I frequently use ChatGPT for technical troubleshooting and multi-step tasks, and there are two related UI features that I think could significantly improve these workflows.

1. Inline / Branched Follow-Up Threads

When ChatGPT provides a response containing several steps, users often need clarification on one particular step before they can continue.

Currently, asking that clarification requires sending another message into the main vertical conversation. This pushes the original instructions further up the chat and gradually separates the follow-up discussion from the step it relates to.

It would be useful if users could select a specific paragraph, bullet point, or step and start a contextual sub-thread from it.

For example:

Step 1
Step 2 → [Ask about this]
Step 3
Step 4

Selecting “Ask about this” could open a side panel, horizontal branch, or expandable thread containing the discussion specifically related to Step 2.

This could provide two advantages:

  • The original workflow remains visually intact.

  • ChatGPT explicitly knows which part of its previous response the user is discussing, reducing lost or ambiguous context.

The main conversation could therefore continue vertically while individual topics branch horizontally when deeper discussion is required.

2. Convert Multi-Step Responses into Checklists

For responses containing instructions or a sequence of tasks, it would also be useful to have an option such as “Convert to checklist.”

The user could then mark each step as completed while working through the instructions.

Ideally, checklist state would also become part of ChatGPT’s conversational context.

For example, ChatGPT could know that:

  • Steps 1–3 are complete.

  • Step 4 is currently being worked on.

  • Steps 5–8 have not yet been attempted.

This would make questions such as “What should I do next?”, “I’m stuck here”, or “Can we continue?” much more reliable because ChatGPT would understand the user’s actual progress rather than having to infer it from previous messages.

Combined Experience

These two features could work especially well together.

A user could have a persistent checklist representing the overall task while opening contextual branches against individual steps whenever additional troubleshooting is required.

This would make ChatGPT feel less like a linear chat history and more like an interactive workspace for completing complex tasks.

I think this would be especially valuable for technical troubleshooting, coding, configuration guides, learning, project work, onboarding, and any workflow where a ChatGPT response becomes something the user actively works through rather than simply reads.
