Feature Request: Folder-Based Organization for ChatGPT Conversations

The project with folder option is a good and real time saver. But why don’t you provide a Folder within a folder facility so that we can manage the complete project with different tasks or sections? Canva App provides this facility, which is life-saving.

for anyone paying attention, I still want folders. The current Project feature, while sometimes helpful is actually insufficient and not what is needed. I want to be able to group chat threads together AND i want to be able to use different models across those chat threads. In most cases, I don’t want to have any type of shared context or other details across the group of chats. I just want some basic organisation

I don’t understand it, everyone who wants to work seriously with GPT would need something like this and it would also be much more resource-efficient.
I always find myself starting things from scratch because it is often faster than using the terrible search function to find old chats and then continue from there.

Projects is not a solution for this and has a completely different goal. Folders is just about categorizing and sorting your own chats like in a file explorer so that you can continue with them later without having to explain everything to GPT again in a new chat.

This is now possible! /25charfiller

For those that don’t know, this is now a feature for Plus only. So you have to pay for folders. Wow, a new low! Monetizing almost any other feature than this would have been better.

Totally necessary, especially for projects
i think the free users deserve this.

I was looking for something similar for ages too — organizing ChatGPT chats into folders would be a game changer.

I recently came across a Chrome extension called “ Cloud Folders & Search, Organize for ChatGPT” that actually adds folders, bookmarks, and even search inside ChatGPT. Tried it out last week and it’s been really helpful so far. Not perfect, but gets the job done and feels native inside the UI.

Might be worth checking out if you’re still struggling with messy chat history.

I agree, the Folder feature was a needed improvement. They should now build on this by add a subfolder option. Also, allow the user to organize the order in which the folders and subfolders appear in the sidebar - alphabetically, by date, user-selected by drag and drop, etc.

+1 I registered just to add my name to the list of people who would like to see chats organized into folders. It would be really useful and convenient, thank you.

Wanted to add an updated note here since this thread still comes up when people search for folder extensions.

The multi-device limitation vlasky mentioned is still a real problem with most extensions, they store folder data locally in the browser, so switching PCs breaks the structure. No extension has properly solved this yet.

As of early 2026, the extension landscape for this has also gotten messier. Several options that were recommended in 2024 have since gone inactive, with low user counts (under 60), no updates, and in a couple of cases the extension websites themselves are down. Worth checking the “Last updated” date on any Chrome Store listing before installing.

For anyone still looking: the most honest answer right now is that no third-party extension fully replicates what a native folder system would do, especially across devices. The workaround that holds up best is ChatGPT’s own Projects feature for grouping related conversations, not perfect, but server-side and device-independent.

I looked into this in detail recently while writing about the current state of folder extensions, happy to share specifics if useful.
