Feature Request: Folder-Based Organization for ChatGPT Conversations

I have thousands of chats. This is literal and not hyperbole. I have resorted to keeping a spreadsheet of links to important conversations I’ve had for research and work. Please OpenAI, add native folders. This is such a critical component that seems to have been overlooked.

+1. Yes. Please, add this functionality.

Yes, Please! I’ve started using some other AI options that have this ability, as well as the ability to search my chats. The lack of either of these options is making it more and more difficult for me to use ChatGPT conversations. I’m an training and development content creator, and I’m constantly trying to find previous chats as we build out our curriculum. It’s inefficient and time consuming to look through old chats, even though I’ve given them descriptive names.

+1 from a Comp Sci student. Many of my major-specific classes are experimental sections, testing the implementation of generative AI in academia. I frequently jump between projects and would love to set up folder structures for my different classes, different projects within the classes, different sections of projects, etc. I’ve not yet experimented with “Create a GPT,” but I’d imagine the ability to assign GPTs to specific folders would be very beneficial. Manageable folder-specific memory could be helpful too.

Only came here for this  We need organisation!!! My chats are a mess! There should be a folder system. One entry for recents, then folders we create.

This is a very good idea! I need this feature!

For e.g.: I am a teacher and I want to create folders for my classes, students, etc.

Would add +10000 … this is an absolute feature and would significantly user experience.

We need it now! 1000s of upvotes!

The is 100% the most important feature to add to ChatGPT at the moment. Groups and Subgroups along with Tags just like one sees on this page is what is needed in the app ASAP.

  1. Tagging: Allow users to manually tag conversations with custom labels (e.g., “Project X,” “Research,” “Personal,” etc.).
  2. Automatic Grouping by Topic: Implement AI-driven topic detection to automatically group related conversations.
  3. Bot-based Grouping: Automatically group conversations based on the specific bot or integration used, making it easier to reference past interactions.
  4. Manual Grouping: Provide users with the ability to manually drag and drop conversations into folders or groups for personalized organization.
  5. Search and Filter: Enhance the search functionality to include filtering by tags, topics, or bots to quickly locate past conversations.

My kingdom for …

Just jumping in to add another request for folder. They would be so helpful in organizing my workspaces

Claude currently has a similar version to this called projects. Each folder can have a few shared context files. It’s really helfpul overall, and I think it’s one of the main UX failures of ChatGPT as of today

Still waiting for this feature!..It should be pretty easy to implement and the more that people can actually arrange/use these folders of “notes” then the less people would re-compute the same query

Jumping on the band wagon! It’s getting to the point where organizing my chats is essential. Even better…I’d love to ask Chat GPT to organize my chats and it does it for me :open_mouth:

You guys should check out the Easy Folders browser extension. It integrates a folder system directly into ChatGPT AND Claude.

i just sign in to suport this idea, managing all the conversation has become a headache

Also signing to support this idea.

I use chatgpt for work productivity, learning languages, and for creativity and just standard home related things

For every post I see about extensions, I see posts saying to weary of extensions.

Why not just make an official upgrade to the UI to save us all the worry of using extensions then?

I found this forum and created an account to make this request. Folders, categories or “Profiles” would be great. I use ChatGPT for work and for personal questions, and I’d rather a coworker not see a personal topic in the sidebar that I forgot to rename.
