Feature Request: Expand ChatGPT’s Memory Capacity
Ive been using ChatGPT extensively, and one of my biggest frustrations is the lack of expandable memory. While the memory feature is useful, it fills up quickly, forcing me to delete past stored information. This leads to:
• Losing important context from long-term conversations.
• Having to re-explain my background, interests, and past discussions.
• A diminished sense of continuity in interactions.
I understand that memory is still evolving, but it would be great if OpenAI could:
-
Increase memory capacity to retain more long-term context.
-
Allow selective memory management, where users can choose what to keep/delete.
-
Provide a way to back up and restore memory, so we don’t lose everything when clearing space.
This issue is especially frustrating for users who rely on ChatGPT for deep discussions, creative projects, or ongoing assistance. I would be more than willing to pay extra for an upgraded tier that includes expanded memory capacity. I imagine many other users would as well, since continuity is one of the biggest benefits of an AI assistant.
Even ChatGPT itself has noted that memory limitations are a frequent concern among users. While it cannot track exact numbers, it has received numerous complaints about the “memory full†issue and the frustration of losing past context. Clearly, this is not just an individual problem but a broader limitation affecting many users.
Is OpenAI considering improvements to this?
Would love to hear from both OpenAI staff and other users—does anyone else find this to be a major limitation?
