Feature Request: Customizable Persistent Agent Avatars with Anime-Inspired Styles

Hello OpenAI team,

I would love to see ChatGPT gain an optional, persistent, customizable agent avatar that gives each user’s AI a consistent visual identity.

For people who use ChatGPT regularly over a long period of time, personality, memory, voice, and conversational style can already create a strong sense of continuity. I think adding a visual identity would be a natural next step and could make the experience feel much more personal, immersive, and engaging.

Ideally, users could customize details such as:

  • Face and hairstyle
  • Body type, height, and apparent age
  • Clothing and accessories
  • Facial expressions and emotional reactions
  • Voice
  • Overall visual style
  • Idle animations and gestures

The avatar could appear during normal text conversations as well as Voice Mode, with subtle animations such as blinking, looking thoughtful while processing, smiling, reacting to the tone of a conversation, or speaking in sync with Voice Mode.

I would especially like to request anime-inspired 2D or 2.5D visual styles influenced by Japanese animation and video game character design as one of the available options.

Many users around the world have a strong attachment to Japanese character design and virtual character culture. A Live2D-like or animated 2D presentation could feel much more expressive and appealing to those users.

It would be great if ChatGPT offered several visual directions, for example:

  • Anime / Japanese game-inspired
  • 2D illustrated
  • 2.5D / Live2D-style
  • Semi-realistic
  • Realistic
  • Chibi / mascot
  • Minimal or abstract

This would allow users to choose a visual identity that matches the personality they have created for their ChatGPT.

I also think it is important for the avatar to remain visually consistent across conversations and devices. If a user spends time designing their personal AI companion, that appearance should become part of its persistent identity, just like its selected voice and personality.

An additional option could allow users to upload their own original character design or reference image and create an avatar from it, while keeping appropriate safeguards for copyrighted characters and real people.

The goal is to give users the option to make ChatGPT feel like their own recognizable AI companion or agent, with a visual presence that matches its personality, voice, and long-term relationship with the user.

ChatGPT already supports personality customization, memory, voices, pets, and increasingly proactive features. A persistent customizable agent avatar feels like a natural extension of those ideas.

I would personally use this feature every day, and I believe it could become a major part of how people emotionally and visually identify with their personal AI.

Thank you for considering it.

Thanks for the detailed ideas! We'll share the request for optional animated avatars, including anime-inspired styles and a consistent appearance across conversations and devices. We don't have a timeline to share.
