Hi OpenAI team — could you add a UI Density / Compact Mode option for ChatGPT responses?
A lot of us are seeing excessive vertical spacing (often described as “double spaced,” “too much padding,” “wasted screen”) that forces unnecessary scrolling—especially on desktops when responses are long or include bullets/code.
What would solve it (suggestions users keep repeating)
-
Density toggle: Comfortable (current) / Compact / Extra-compact
• Compact should reduce line-height + paragraph spacing + list-item gaps (bullets) so answers can fit on one screen. -
Slider controls (advanced):
• Let users adjust font size + line height (e.g., 1.0 / 1.15 / 1.3) and optionally “paragraph spacing before/after.”
• This request comes up in community/desktop contexts too (people want direct control over line-height and related UI density). -
Remember preference (important):
• Persist the setting per account (and ideally per device) so it doesn’t reset. -
Make code + lists truly compact:
• Many complaints are specifically about extra gaps between bullet points and lines of code that make technical outputs harder to scan. -
Copy/paste formatting option:
• Add “Copy as plain text / clean formatting” so pasting into Docs/Word/Notion doesn’t bring along awkward spacing or blank lines. (People are actively searching for workarounds/extensions/tools for this.) -
Bonus (related) layout control:
• A simple Compact vs Wide view toggle would also help reduce scrolling and improve tables/code readability in full-screen usage.
Why this matters
• Productivity: Less scrolling = faster work, especially for power users, prompt engineers, and anyone reading long outputs.
• Better scanning: Dense lists and code are easier to review when they don’t have excessive vertical padding.
• User choice: Keep current spacing as default for readability—just give a Compact option for people who want it.
